Our trip, our stay in Burrell Boom, was just one of a kind. Our first day, a spider monkey decided to grace us with his presence. That evening the howler monkey's started howling, but no so horrible, that you couldn't sleep. The house is "rustic", the description is real. Everything you get to experience, if you have an open mind, you will have the best time. Just one note, we took our host's advice, and utilized the transportation service company. KenShan, Kenny and Shana. In all our travels, we haven't experience the level of service these two provided. Phenomenal. They helped us experience the true Belizean culture that left you feeling like "family". There were several different homes people invited us in for dinner. Ms. Carols was the best fried chicken ever! Robert, at the baboon sanctuary was awesome. We just tell you enough on how exceptional the trip was. A must....truly a gem.
Howler house was amazing! Lovely home right on the river and in the jungle. Do yourself a favor and also book with Kenny and Shana as they are fantastic and go above and beyond! Truly enjoyed our stay!
My stay at this house was amazing. The place is quiet, clean, beautiful, in the jungle by the river and just a short walk to a small store and local restaurant. Everything you need is there and the guests book gives you all the informations you need. Erika gave clear direction on how to get there and enter the house. I stopped to a big store in Ladyville for some food shopping on the way to the house (you must want to do so). Been going around with Shana and Kenny (transport service) and they are very accommodating, professional and friendly. Also spent an afternoon at their nice spot called Friends of friends outback having lunch and refreshing ourselves in the little pool. Coming back to the house in the evening for a fresh breeze on the veranda listening to the howler monkeys (what an experience!) Had delicious food and friendly chat with Miss Carol at her restaurant. I think that my favourite moment was waking up in the morning at this house and having my coffee peacefully surrounded by this spectacular nature. I am definitely going back shortly. Thank you so much Erika for that opportunity to spend time at your house and thanks Tinny for the spotless cleaning job.
First, the location is great and the wildlife and river are wonderful. If you are looking for a place to stay where you can see Howlers up close then this place is perfect.
We arrived, without instructions as to how to get there and the house code as we did not have internet access. The owner sent it to us 5 minutes after we could check in, but we were delayed as my son had to be rushed to the hospital in Belize City after an accident. We arrived in Burrell Boom where I figured we could connect to internet so I could get info on where the house was, but ended up with a local person guiding us to the house. He was very helpful, and without his help even with directions we wouldn't have found the place. It is not marked at all and is remote. I was able to make a short phone call with a local phone to get the code to go inside before it went dead.
We went inside to find the house a mess. Dirt on the floor, dirty towels hanging about, refrigerator with molding food in it and sinks and toilets dirty. It was late so we headed to the convenience store for food and figured we would charge the phone while gone and call the owner after we got back. While we were gone the housekeeper showed up and started cleaning. We arrived to her apologizing profusely for how it was and then bursting out crying as she said she had been at the doctors all day with her daughter so she didn't have time to clean up from the people who left that morning before we came. Anyway, unbeknownst to us the man who helped us find the place was in some sort of a fued with the house cleaner and she started screaming and yelling at him in front of us. We told them both we didn't care what was going on between them but we didn't want to be in the middle of it. She apologized for being unprofessional, but then went on to berate the man to us. This went on for the entire stay as she would come and start yelling and told us not to let him come on the property. I didn't feel it was my place to tell him to go and didn't want to be dragged into the pettiness. Along with that tension the whole stay we also had issues with not enough blankets or towels, which they did remedy and the screens in the house were torn so a lot of bugs came it. As far as the house being luxury, it is anything but. Doors that don't close properly, screens with holes, railings dangerously loose and a moldy refrigerator to name a few. They do have internet, but only fast enough intermittently to send or recieve a text only email. Also, for future people who want to rent this place...there is no close parking. You have to walk quite a ways from the road to the house on a wood walkway over the swamp. The canoe only had one paddle and you have to go to the neighbors dock to get it in the water. The bathroom is so small that you have to walk in squeeze close to the sink to get the door closed. There is no shower curtain or full wall so be careful after you shower as to not slip and fall on the wet floors. As for the twin bed on the porch....you can't sleep out there as the floor has holes to the outside and the bugs are all over the place. The windows are louvered on the front but the entire side and back ones are just screens. Completely open air.
Staying in the Tree House for 4 nights was great! We enjoyed seeing more than 35 species of birds. From the Montezuma Oropendola, the Collard Aracari, to the small American Redstart. We got a lot of great pictures right from the balcony. We even canoed up river to fish and saw Crocodiles. The Howler Monkeys were really cool to hear and see. It was an enjoyable stay we would do again. We also took a day to go see the Mayan ruins. We planned to see Altun Ha but at the advice of our driver and tour guide Kenny Williams we went to see Lamanai. The trip up the New River was such a nice boat ride in the morning. Seeing more birds and Crocodiles on a beautiful river was great. Kenny and Shauna really took care of us with any needs we had and we highly recommend using their services. Polite and professional! Can't wait to go back!
