Eaten here twice now and have to say the food is really good. Beautiful prawns in garlic, a "blue" steak which really was as ordered and all served by the lovely and scintillating Ann who is also one of the owners. It can be a tad pricey if you are straying too far off the fixed price menu but by no means outrageous. Pleasant surroundings, relaxing - all in all a really nice place to eat. High standard every time, Keep it up girls.

Ahernes just demonstrated why they are such a good property . Arrived late after a day out and we knew that the restaurant and bar would be closed for the evening . But the Staff organised some exquisite open chicken sandwiches , seafood chowder , smoked salmon and brown bread . Everything was delicious . Service with a smile and the a very skilful chief .

Stayed in Aherne's with my wife this week. My last stay was many years ago. This is a beautiful location. Staff were friendly. Room was spacious and quiet. Dinner was excellent. We both had the set dinner menu. The choices of starters and mains were good. The food was well presented and tasted like good food cooked well should taste. Breakfast was cooked to order with a wide choice available. This was a treat. I hope I don't have to wait as long again for my next visit!

We had been here some years ago and decided to re-visit Youghal for a couple of nights on our way home from a weekend in Wexford. I booked a "junior suite" at a premium price thinking a large sitting area would be nice if the weather turned bad. We were shown to a large bedroom with two comfortable armchairs and a very small balcony. The definition of a suite is moot!

However, we were very comfortable in a huge bed and large bathroom with bath and shower. The furnishings are good and there is a safe in the wardrobe. Breakfasts are tasty and freshly cooked with fresh strawberries and very nice yogurt to start. We had a very good expensive dinner one night.

The bar is not typically Irish anymore as Ahearns has been "modernised" since our last visit. The atmosphere and ambiance have been directed very much towards overseas visitors. This is also reflected in the manner we were dealt with by the staff. Not unfriendly, but somewhat brusque and none of the usual chatter enjoyed in so many Irish hotels and guesthouses.

It was quite expensive for a two night stay and the property suffers a bit from an identity crisis. It is not really a hotel in the strict sense as it is a good restaurant with some rooms to stay in. As such, the layout involves several doors and a gate to enter and leave with a regular fumbling with the key.

Our room was on the first floor and there was a constant hum of a fan or other machinery which reverberated through the structure of the building near the room. This was not massively loud but sufficient to irritate light sleepers so we had two interrupted nights of poor sleep.

Would I stay here again? No, I will go to a proper hotel or a friendly B&B/guesthouse.

Sandra and I were lucky enough to spend 3 nights here earlier this month. David and the staff are superb - we were really made welcome and felt at home. If you eat in the restaurant any of the seafood is worth having but the prawns were exceptional! Truly great stay!
