“Excellent, clean, up-to-date cottage in a magnificent locality”

About 15mins from Ardara near the end of the Loughross Peninsula with views of the bays on both sides and of the Slievetooey mountains. There is a sandy/rocky beach a couple of minutes away by car - great for the early morning walk for our four lurchers, yes 4, which Sean kindly allowed to stay.
The cottage has been modernised/enlarged to a high standard. The tv receives Uk/Irish programmes and the oil heating is very efficient.
We were very comfortable here and definitely recommend the cottage to anyone who is interested in visiting the local beaches for swimming etc or for walking in the hills. We swam at Narin (Portnoo) , Glen Bay (Glencolumcille), "Silver Strand" at Malin Beg and at Fintragh Bay (Killybegs) . The Gulf Stream keeps the water temp. up.
Do drive the road on the other side of Loughros Beg Bay and see Maghera Strand (sands) and the sea caves ; swimming dangerous here though. Drive on to An Port on the coast; great swimming in the bay ( no sand) and well worth a walk up to the top of the hill to look over the cliffs.
Talking of cliffs, if you go on a longer trip north to Burtonport and take the regular car ferry to Arranmore Island, do drive out to Rinawros Point (lighthouse/old coastguard station). Walk for a bit up the grass to the right of the lighthouse and you'll find some magnificent cliff views. Also, opposite the coastguard station ,walk to the cliff edge and you'll see 150 steps going down to the cove . Fascinating , hidden gem.
Finally the cottage is a great base for Killybegs and its trawler fleet and, of course, the Slieve League cliffs. See these from the designated car park or take the trouble to climb the Pilgrim's Path ( signposted from Teelin) for a couple of hours to bring you out above these renowned cliffs.
Or simply explore the woollen/tweed shops of Ardara and enjoy the regular music the town has to offer in the evenings.

“Beautiful spot for peaceful getaway”

Ard A Mhaoire is very comfortable and well-equipped. The owner met us at the petrol station on the outskirts of Ardara and we followed him to the cottage. He showed us around before leaving us to settle in. There were fresh flowers and a bottle of wine on the kitchen table - a very nice touch.
The cottage is in a beautiful, quiet location. A 20min walk in one direction takes you to the slipway at the end of the peninsula. A 5-10min walk in the other direction takes you to a small, secluded beach.
Are A Mhaoire is ideally situated to explore the west coast of Donegal. Ardara is a 10min drive away - a pretty town with a mixture of gift shops, pubs & cafes and 2 small supermarkets.
The only small downside for us was that the garden wasn't securely fenced. We had our 2 dogs with us, and we couldn't let them out into the lovely big garden without them being on the lead. With livestock all around us, we simply couldn't take the risk.
Otherwise, I'd have no hesitation in recommending this lovely cottage.

“We want to go back!”

This cottage is near town but feels very private. It is walking distance to the beach and about a 5 minute drive to town. The cottage is modern and clean. Sean met us at the Texaco when we arrived even though we arrived quite late. (Maloney's Texaco is a great place for smaller quantities of food and supplies. They are well stocked.) He showed us how to start a peat fire and how to work everything. The bottle of wine was a nice touch too! Having a washing machine was very helpful too. We really enjoyed our stay and we hope to return again.
