“Beautiful, well kept suite with an amazing host, just up the road from a great surf / swim beach”
Reviewed 9 July 2017 for a stay in June 2017

Dunia is an amazing person and takes a lot of pride in her rental property and hospitality. The suite was beautiful, very clean, recently built, and perfectly well kept. She even has an extra outdoor shower and foot wash area set up for returning from the beach.

During our stay she went over and above our expectations multiple times. She offered to pick up groceries for us one day, which instead ended up as a field trip to town. She helped with a health emergency at 2am, translating between us and the doctors / nurses. Then a couple more field trips into town for a doctor visit/medication and showing us a local cafe and the micro brewery. I felt horrible for asking her to help, but she was happily willing, and after we treated her to brunch and topped up her fuel tank out of appreciation. When our trip was over she introduced us to locals for transport directly to our airport hotel in Costa Rica. In the past she has also set up transport to her house from the airport for worry free arrivals.

Just down the road from her place are multiple restaurants and shops to rent surf boards right on the beach. Dunia has a solid collection of boards of her own, and offered to let me rent one if I was interested. The beach (Playa Maderas) is highly regarded by locals as a great surf spot with consistent waves, which it was. At mid - low tide there is plenty of sandy beach to play or lay on, and rock tide pools to explore. Dunia also happens to be a high level (and extremely humble) surfer, I took advantage of her lessons mid-trip, and she helped my surfing progress beyond a beginner. One of the hostels in San Juan Del Sur offers multiple shuttles daily to and from Playa Maderas for US$4-5 return.

Dunia and a co-worker offer massages in house. I injured my shoulder surfing, and with their help, only took one day off. The muscle strains would have been a longer standing issue otherwise. My wife had multiple massages as well, and was happy with them.

This was our favourite place we stayed while in Nicaragua, and it was nice to be able to walk from the house for surfing, food, and drinks.

“Best place we have been to in the SJDS area”
Reviewed 24 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

In one word: excellent house, casa jardin as well as casa luna. We rented the whole place for 3 nights with our small family of 5. We had a wonderful time, we loved the houses, the setting, the excellent kitchen facilities, bed rooms. It is all decorated in a nice way, quality materials and with a cordial service from the care takers. Definitly would go back there in the future as the price/quality is one of the best in the SJDS area. You do not need a vehicle if you schedule well the SJDS-Maderas shuttle. If you come with a vehicle, please come with 4x4 as the last hill is steep as well as the hill to get to Casa Dunia parking. We seen a number of town vehicles get stuck on the hill coming from Playa Maderas.

Liked best: The materials, decoration, eye for detail in the house/around the house
Liked least: Playa Maderas is a surfing beach, not the best for swimming in high tides, low tide swimming is fine.

“Dunia's is the only place you want to Stay!”
Reviewed 29 June 2016 for a stay in February 2016

We Loved our stay at Casa Dunia. Dunia has all the details covered and is a terrific hostess. She was able to arranged transportation for us which was on time, really comfortable, and very reasonably priced. It was nice landing at the airport knowing that we didn't need to worry a thing, especially trying to explain directions to somewhere we've never been. The unit we stayed in was perfectly appointed and comfortable and very clean, designed beautifully with lots of custom touches, the bed was very comfortable. It seems like Dunia has thought of everything, even going as far as providing complementary coffee for the morning. If you're looking to enjoy Playa Maderas it's only a quick 1-2 min walk down the road where you'll find 4 restaurants/bars perfect for anyone not looking to prepare food themselves, although the kitchen is perfectly equipped to do so. Getting to SJDS was a easy with a shuttle leaving to and from Maderas 4 times a day. We didn't need a car well here. Taxis are also an option. Set in a jungle like setting the sound of wildlife is all around, we had a troop of monkeys literally directly above the house which was super cool! We loved the howler monkeys and their wake-up calls in the morning. Amazing place to stay, can't imagine you'd find better in the area. We would go back 100%.

“Awesome location, sunsets, botanical garden and perfect beach access”
Reviewed 24 June 2016 for a stay in May 2016

Dunia is a walking legend in the San Juan del Sur area.
Im convinced of this because at the mention of her name a pickup truck on its way to Maderas offered a ride to Casa Dunia.

Casa Dunia is a slice of paradise, located right along the Maderas beach, famous for its perfect break. The home is on a slight hill so it overlooks a strip of jungle before leading to a magnificent long stretch of beach with a couple of friendly bars for drinks and music. The rooms are made with beautiful locally sourced wood and the screened-in porches makes you feel like you are floating among the trees. Dunia is an expert surfer/teacher, provides options for massages and sells unique handmade jewelry. The rooms are fully equipped and just feel so peaceful, everything about the place leaves you feeling connected to nature. If you are interested in supporting local entrepreneurs, Dunia is your lady.
Overall the place is magnificent and full of positive energy. Highly recommend it over the other tourist heavy hostals/hotel options.

Tips: Be sure to stop by the Pali (like a central american walmart) before entering the road to Maderas beach to stock up on supplies for food and drink. Once you are at Dunia's by the Maderas beach you will not want to leave. Later in the evening, once the Madera beach bars have closed, there are sometimes bonfires on the beach.

“Fantastic stay at Dunia's”

Dunia is a lovely , awesome host. Her generosity, humor, kindness, and positive energy is infectious. She is a woman of strength and talent who not only runs this gem of a hide away Air B'n B, but who also does massage and teaches surfing. Our son had the privilege in taking a lesson from her, and by the end of it , he was standing on the board surfing the waves ( huge smile on his face). Our place had a well equipped kitchen, a spacious bedroom and living room with great flow of ocean air coming in the windows. The outdoor patio has a hammock which was my favorite spot. We also were able to use the outdoor grill to cook up a fantastic steak. This was our favorite place in Nicaragua. We hope to go back and visit Dunia one day and stay at this wonderful gem of a place. Thank you Dunia, You ROCK
