Owner description: A unique spot in the heart of the Pennine countryside, Standedge Tunnel is the longest canal tunnel in Britain and makes a perfect family day out. As one of the Seven Wonders of the Waterways visitors can explore deep into the tunnel on one of the family friendly guided boat trips, stop for a bite to eat in the cafe and let the kids jump, climb and explore around our playground and wildlife garden.

My friends and I were escorted through Standedge tunnel which was a fascinating trip. Our guide was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the history and construction of the tunnel complex. Despite the weather and number of locks that we went through, the tunnel was the highlight of our week.

Great visitor centre with the added bonuses of outdoor and indoor play areas. Lovely cafe and gift shop.
The 30 minute boat trip was superb - you can’t fail to be amazed at the construction of the tunnel. Our boat guide Howard was very friendly, knowledgeable and great with the children on the boat.

What a fantastic afternoon........although the weather was dreary, the boat ride was fascinating....my 2 children 11 and 6 were immersed into the life of a "legger"....I actually thought my 11 year old wasn't listening to Howard our guide, but he answered question right and really enjoyed the tour....Howard was full of interesting facts and made the journey into the dark tunnel fun and informative, the little Cafe had a good menu, and the kids really enjoyed their hot chocolate to warm them up.......the small visitor's centre was packed with information about the tunnel and the wildlife that lives on the canal..... my only moan would be the walk from the Marsden Station to the tunnel itself, had it been a lovely day we may of wandered along the tow path, but the road round is fairly steep, and there is no pavement for the kids.....but other than that the afternoon was lovely.....Thank you Howard.

We took our two four-year-old grandchildren on an adventure to Tunnel End we visited the museum and play area first before taking the 30-minute boat trip into the tunnel, our guide gave an excellent running commentary throughout the trip showing artifacts and pointing out places of interest which really added to the trip. All the staff and volunteers were helpful and polite. For those with claustrophobia, there's a shuttle barge from Marsden to Tunnel end for a small cost alternatively a short walk along the towpath.

Worthwhile visiting this free museum with informative display boards and items to illustrate the making of the Standedge Tunnel. Also a very useful indoor infants' play area and outdoors too.
Nice cafe by the tunnel entrance!
Travel either by car or, better still, walk there from Marsden or the station along the canal towpath.
