“Wonderful historic property”
Reviewed 18 December 2016 for a stay in December 2016

Six of us stayed in this wonderful property and loved the views, the decor, the history, and the comfort. The view of the river was beautiful, and the host made us feel at ease from the moment we walked through the door. The beds were comfortable and there was plenty of room with a full dining room, lounge and reasonably well-equipped kitchen. It is situated in a secluded, quiet area and we slept very well. We got a personal tour of the rest of the house, and we feel so fortunate to have had a chance to stay in such a lovely house full of so much history. Our only regrets are that we did not have more time to spend there, and that we arrived in December so didn't get a chance to see the gardens in full bloom. We will return!

“Amaizing View in a quite and beautiful place!”
Reviewed 12 October 2016 for a stay in September 2016

We spent 1 week in Dromana House (4 fishermen). We were in Ireland for only one purpose : fishing... First, Mrs and M. Grubb are friendly and welcoming ; they remain discreet but helpful if needed. Dromana House is a charming, with a amazing view on the Blackwater river. The garden is wonderful and well maintained.
The kitchen is fully equipped and adequate for our requirements. The bedrooms were comfortable and the main bathroom is great.
Concerning our main occupation (fishing), we were really pleased to catch 10 salmons in a week (4 fishermen fishing almost all the day, except during the high tide).
Really a nice place to stay, in familly or with friends!

“Historical House but holiday accommodation not up to standard”
Reviewed 31 May 2016 for a stay in May 2016

We stayed here in May 2016 for 10 days, the first leg of our 1 month car tour of Ireland. Barbara and Nicholas, the owners of this historic house, and descendants are very pleasant. However their focus is on the extensive gardens that Dromana, the house has, and they are doing a magnificent job of restoring them after years of neglect. Guests are invited to use the gardens and this is the best reason to stay here. Nice close-up views of the Blackwater river and some lovely plants. Lots of sitting areas to retreat to with a glass of wine.

Unfortunately, we felt the owners are less focused on their paying guests and this was obvious in the accommodation provided to us. The accommodation is large, 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms but while for us it was a novelty to spend time in an historical house, we were not very impressed with the “shabbiness” of it. Some historical places have been modernised beautifully while retaining their character. This is not yet one of them or at least the area where we stayed is not.

Overall, the accommodation provided is down at heel. While a couple of the bathrooms and the kitchen have been modernised to an extent the rest of the accommodation is quite un-appealing – old and worn furniture some covered with old throws, thread bare carpets, cracked and water stained ceilings, some peeling wallpaper and most rooms were quite dark and gloomy. In addition, the accommodation was very cold. The sash windows are old and not double glazed. Although there is an open fire in the lounge, it was useless at heating the room. The only way to warm the place was to use the oil fired central heating which was charged by the owners at 85 euro cents a litre. Charging is by a meter. Expensive heating which for one hour or thereabouts each evening cost us approximately 40 euros for the time we were there (10 days). Very little information on the local attractions to visit was provided in the apartment and no information on local doctors, emergency contacts/phone numbers etc. Also you should bring your own toiletries including toilet rolls and kitchen cleaning items as again, little was provided although linen and towels were. There was half a toilet roll provided for the three toilets and soap bars provided in the bathrooms had been used before, presumably by previous guests. The accommodation is not suitable for young children or mobility impaired people as there is a steep staircase with access directly down from the kitchen. It would be easy to fall down the stairs when exiting the kitchen.

As far as we were concerned, the area has few interesting attractions, the best in our opinion, being the gardens of the castle at Lismore, about 8kms away. The castle itself is not open to the public. You are also within relatively easy driving distance of the coast (Dungarvan, Ardmore may be of interest) and, Waterford, Cork and Blarney castle are a couple of hours or less away.

An experience certainly, but we would not stay there again.

“superb tranquil location on the banks of the Blackwater river”

We were a group of six adults away for a walking weekend in the Knockmealdown Mountains. Dromana House was a 25 minute drive from our starting point. The house is located a few minutes drive from Cappoquin which has a selection of shops, pubs and restaurants. We stayed for two nights and ate in on both evenings. The kitchen, whilst a little small, was fully equipped and adequate for our requirements. Any drawback on the kitchen is more than made up for with the fine dining room which seats a minimum of eight people and is truly a lovely room. The "piece de resistance" is the sitting room which was a joy to relax in and is splendidly furnished. The bedrooms were very comfortable and the main and ensuite bathrooms were lovely, however the showers could perhaps do with an upgrade. The house is located high above the Blackwater river and the gardens are wonderful and a joy to wander through. Finally, the owner Barbara, was very welcoming and extremely helpful and hospitable. We will definitely return to Dromana House.
