This tour is a must do for the overseas visitor and kiwi locals alike, even if you are not that interested in birds. The tour starts with a bus ride which has interesting commentary and background on what you are about to experience. From there clients board a jet boat for a speedy trip down tp the Whataroa River mouth. Parts of the river are rather narrow and shallow and the trip is quite exhilarating. From the river mouth the boat meanders up a back water forest of old Kahikatea trees to a landing area. You then have a short stroll through the forest on a boardwalk to the viewing hide hide.
The White Heron nest only on one bend in the river and this is the only nesting site in New Zealand so it is quite unique. They share the spot with Royal Spoonbills and various other birds at the site. The guide gives ample time for you to observe and everyone is provided with binoculars for real close up viewing. Photo opportunities are fantastic.
Overall the staff were incredibly good, the jet boat driver was very professional, the booking manager in the office went out of her way to be helpful and to top it off, even drove us 20k back to our accomodation at Okarito. There is nothing quite like it in New Zealand and overall we could not fault it..
