Nice resort for a break by the sea

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 25 Jul 2024via mobile
Stayed here at the end of our Borneo Rainforest trip to enjoy time by the sea. Stayed in the ocean wing in an executive suite. Great size with two full bathrooms but the layout doesn’t not flow. It’s two “normal” rooms with their own front door each which we kept open with door stoppers to avoid using key cars moving around - there is an additional joined door to give it the feeling of being one unit- in my view very poorly designed and feels like two units. Whereby a bit dated soft furnishings still very comfortable in my view with great big balconies- the outdoor tubs a bit of a waste of space in my view. Building site next to hotel but disruption through noise is minimal.
The resort itself offer two big very nice pools with plenty of space. The pool massages/reflexology is fabulous.
The beach is a bit disappointing- looks nicer than what it is in reality.
Great a la carte restaurants- service can be a little slow at times everywhere as I don’t think they have enough staff but everyone is working VERY hard and is VERY friendly which compensates. Had the “drinks package” which was great value and added cocktails, bottles of wine etc.
The spa is nice- again a bit dated.
Overall we very much enjoyed our stay and would return when in Borneo.

Last time we stayed at RRR we watched the extension of the Ocean Wing being built; we searched for orangutang; cycled to Tuaran and enjoyed breakfast each morning at Coast restaurant. So it was with some trepidation that we booked again – knowing that the orangutang had gone; the road to Tuaran was busier and Coast had been replaced by a huge new wing and Oceana restaurant. But we were absolutely delighted by what we found! The resort is bigger, but it didn’t feel crowded at any time. There was still plenty to do – but honestly who can resist the 3 fabulous pools and the stunning beach? Special mention to Elizabeth by the pool, Keisha at the Egg Station; Yee Zhing and Evelyn at the front desk; Melvin at the Discovery Centre; Adeline at the Lobby Lounge; Alice and Rafiq in Food and Beveridge. Bravo RRR and congratulations to the leadership of this magnificent resort!

Even though the staff do a wonderful job, I expected more, given the price we paid. We had two garden wing rooms, one had a slight smell of mould but, the place was booked out, so we couldn’t change rooms. It is at least an hours drive from KK, so if you are happy to just hang at the resort, this is the place for you. They have a complementary bus that goes into town and back 3 times per day.
The breakfast buffet was very busy, people waiting for tables anytime after 9am. They were running out of glasses, bowls, fresh juice, pancakes, muesli. The coffee machine was good.
The beach was disappointing, I saw a plastic bag in the sea. It takes a good distance before the water is up to your waist. This is not the resort to come to if you want to lie by the beach. It is at least 100 metres from the resort.
The rainforest walk was a highlight, although we did not see any wildlife on the day we went for a walk.
The food and drink is pricey. Buffet dinner$250 for a family of 4.
The rooms were a good size, beds comfortable, pillows wonderful.
The staff and great and I had a lovely massage. Thinking that the place needs a bit of an uplift to be good value for money.

Room tip: Get in early for breakfast. Rainforest walk is worth the beautiful view.

        We really enjoyed our stay!

I would agree with some of the comments that there are areas that are dated however I don’t think this really detracted from a great stay.

The room was spacious with good amenities; we were ground floor in the garden wing but it looked out over the beach so was a great view.
Bathroom was large and had plentiful toiletries.

We upgraded to the all inclusive package which worked out roughly £150 per day for two of us which sounds expensive but this was definitely worthwhile for us - as others have said the prices are not the cheapest (although we didn’t feel they were wild).
The package does also have some other perks like a laundry wash and taxi transfer.

We had no issues with the food and enjoyed all our meals. Tepi laut at lunchtimes was really excellent and we enjoyed the evening meals here a lot also as we enjoyed the authentic cuisine options.

Breakfast buffet was busy as others have said but the food was plentiful and the staff work hard.

The pool area is lovely with extremely comfy beds and we had no problems with the QR code ordering drinks - huge thank you to Isaac and Eddie who were fantastic around the pool. The lifeguards are really on the ball too which was good to see.

The bar service in general was really excellent bar one evening when people were waiting upwards of 40 minutes for drinks, however I think unfortunately they had had a huge influx for a conference and there simply weren’t enough staff and those there were working super hard. They did get quite a lot of complaints but by the next evening it was rectified and they were better than ever. Nella was just lovely.

The laundry services were excellent and we also booked two excursions at the hotel desk and both were good.

We had no issues with mosquitoes until we sat at the sunset beach bar where we got bitten to death so we did avoid but obviously that’s not the hotel issue.

The gym was good with a range of equipment, if anything the aircon could have been cooler as it was really warm in the mornings.

The staff are really a credit to this resort and we didn’t meet one person who wasn’t friendly and helpful.

        A great stay!

Thank goodness for the smiling, happy, helpful staff! Who are wonderful.
The resort is huge and is well maintained. Beautiful gardens, lobby and corridors all clean.

Luckily we upgraded to the ocean wing where it is quieter. The pool area just for the ocean wing guests was a haven compared to the garden wing.

Our room was a junior suite with an ocean view. The room was massive, with great views (apart from the building work to the left which was going on with some noise when we were on the balcony). The room had everything you need with a free mini bar (no alcohol). BUT it’s sooooooo dated as other reviews have said. Not Shanghai-la standards at all. In fact it was the biggest let down of our 3 week trip. The Tanjung Aru in KK is far superior in standards and rooms. The rooms here need a total refurb and a deep clean to bring them in line with a 5* property.

As guests of the ocean wing we were entitled to choose from having brekkie in the main restaurant or the smaller, more personable Oceano.

Thank god for the Oceano! Breakfast here was a great experience with buffet stations and unlimited a la carte. Nothing was too much trouble for the amazing Suryana/Sue. She remembered our names, favourite coffees, window seat etc etc. she was so kind and helpful and really looked after us. So much so we went back to eat there in the evening, which was amazing!!! Again fantastic service from Sue, wonderful quality food, expertly presented and tasted delicious! She’s such an asset to this hotel.

The Oceano was a god send as the main buffet was chaotic! Too crowded, mediocre food, staff overstretched, tables being taken when we were already there! Dirty plates left, the speciality stations ran out of food! It was awful. In fact we didn’t even finish our meal- it’s not what we expect from a five star resort.

Unfortunately this is the only choice for guests in the ocean wing unless you pay extra to eat in the a la carte restaurants. We didn’t realise- we upgraded and paid the extra mainly for the use of the restaurants in our half board package. Good food and ambience is extremely important to us when on holiday. As a good will gesture the front desk did give us a 150rm each allowance towards the a la carte restaurants, which we were grateful for.

There’s no club lounge, like in the Tanjung Aru, or any extras you’d expect when paying top notch prices. The bars were extremely expensive and ALL the activities eg yoga, bike are all chargeable! Disappointing.

I totally agree with other people that this is an embarrassment for the Shanghai-La group. It needs to be upgraded urgently and exhibit the same standards as the other one in KK (less than hour away!) I can’t believe it is a Shanghai-La!!

Again, thanks to Sue and the hard working staff. With a refurb and if they offered more than just peace and quiet for an expensive upgrade this has the potential to be top notch. It’s such a shame that it lacks value for money.

Room tip: Be prepared to pay for everything! Go to the Oceano restaurant and hike Sue serves you.

I was in Rasa Ria to attend my cousin's wedding and stay overnight at Ocean Wing. Events Gracie and the banquet team were excellent and very attentive. The rooms were wonderful and comfortable. The breakfast was great and had lots of choices, I really liked the noodles section.
