Just what the doctor ordered! Restful beautiful setting, warm helpful hosts, sparkling clean with thoughtful touches

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 29 Sept 2019
I really enjoyed my stay here and as a woman travelling on my own, it was a welcoming , safe and easy place to take a week out from normal hectic life, be ‘ looked after ‘ without being fussed over, and get that much needed rest! The new owners Vickiand Alan are a great team, and made for the hospitality business. Friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the island, they get the balance just right between taking care of guests and leaving you alone to enjoy their beautiful tropical setting. Breakfast is delivered daily, and what a fresh tropical tasty treat to get you going. Push bikes are easy to ride around the island- 15-20 min ride to Muri and it’s many eating places and the bus stops a five min walk away.
The bed is super comfy, room spacious and spotlessly clean, with little extras provided such as cloth shopping bag( say no to plastic!) , compost containers, reef shoes, beach towels etc. No food on premises but close to store for provisions and they will organise transfers to restaurants on your behalf if you don’t have a hire vehicle. I managed a week without one, albeit when it rained a couple of times, wished I did! A good fridge in room and crockery etc means you can bring back Food and drink for a supper on deck if want a night in.
I read four novels and managed to keep trading them at Vicki’s and other island book swaps so if you want either rest or / and adventure, away form the masses, this eco retreat is a perfect spot to chill, slumber, explore and enjoy a real taste of island life from. Go, enjoy!

First glamping experience. We stayed her after another property over booked so we were sent here.
What a bonus. We had a convention on for the three nights and its was so peaceful to come home too. I LOVED showering under the trees, it sprinkled one night and it just didnt matter. The bed was super comfy, and the breakfast was so simple but tastefully prepared and served. The residnet feline came to visit which was really nice and added entertainment. Met Vicki and Alan , both very nice people.
We would come back any day. thanks
PS a towel rack would be good thats all.

Kia Orana Brenda & Trevor, it was great you got to enjoy the uniqueness of staying in a Luxury Safari Tent and enjoyed the experience. We love how you describe it as coming "home". Towel rack, yes, noted and will be rectified! Kia Manuia, Vicki & Alan

We loved staying at Ikurangi for 5 nights. It was tranquil, quiet and such a beautiful setting. The owners Vicki and Alan were very friendly and extremely helpful and we appreciated their commitment to making our stay so enjoyable. This included organising private Yoga and massage (both exceptional), transport and anything else that we needed such as restaurant bookings and things to do.

The location was perfect for us as it was away from all the busy resorts and traffic. There is a bit of a walk to the main road if you want to catch the bus but we had a scooter so this wasn’t a problem. When we went out in the evening we called the local taxi and he was always reliable.

We stayed in the Luxury Safari Tent and we were very happy with the accommodation. The bed was clean and comfortable and was serviced every day. The outdoor bathroom was perfect. We enjoyed sitting on the deck in the morning while we had our coffee and also in the evening for a few beers!

Things we did included Stand Up Paddle board Yoga with Brin. She also came to our accommodation for a private Yoga session. Vicki also arranged for a private massage for us both. This was also the best massage we have ever experienced. We did a hike up to the Needles which was quite challenging I would also highly recommend the Storytellers cycle tour which was so much fun and Interesting. There is actually a lot to do on the island that we didn’t have time for. However, we did pack a fair bit in! Next time we will stay longer.

Overall a great experience and highly recommended 👍✅

Enjoyed our stay here over 4 nights. Very pretty setting off the main road. Had our own bungalow with lovely verandah to relax on. Room was spacious. Breakfast delivered to our deck each morning. Use of bikes were a plus but scooter or car would be a bonus, as restaurants are not close by.

Kia Orana, thanks for your review, you've touched on many of the good things guests enjoy about Ikurangi including our FOC bicycles. We are centrally located less than 5km in either direction to the many restaurants and cafes in both busy hubs, Avarua and Muri. Kia Manuia, Vicki & Alan

We loved the beautiful setting, lovely tents, delicious breakfasts and welcoming, helpful hosts Vicky and Alan. We'd strongly recommend Ikurangi to others looking for a peaceful, relaxing getaway where the only noises were the cockerels in chorus in the mornings!

Room tip: Go for the tented options - they're beautiful.

Kia Orana Graham, thanks for your review and recommending Ikurangi to others. You're right, it doesn't get much more peaceful and relaxed than in our secluded location, overlooking the mountains, away from the crowds. Kia Manuia, Vicki & Alan

We hired 2 of the safari tents for a week, with our teenage children, & loved it. Vicky & Alan could not have been more helpful. The staff are lovely & unobtrusive. Outside showering is fab. The site is beautifully located, away from the main tourist areas. It works best if you have hired a scooter or hire car, but a bike ride is ok. So happy we chose Ikurangi in preference to the many beach bungalows / resorts on Raro - nobody we met had much good to say about their value for money.

Things you should know -

- it rains in the tropics, & it can get windy. If you’re going to complain about weather you need to rethink whether a holiday in a tent is for you
- there’s no TV on site. Duh !
- Wi-fi speed is patchy on the island - don’t expect to be gaming

If none of this puts you off, then you’ll adore the solitude of Ikurangi, the simplicity of life in the Cook Islands and the splendour of the scenery. (Probably like Kauai was in 1960.) Pa’s medicine walk is a highlight, ditto the musical boys at Koka Lagoon Tours.

Thank you Alan, Vicky & team.
