Our family of 4 (two teenage boys included) had a very nice stay just a week before the summer ski season opened. Saas Fee encapsulates almost every kind of Alpine scenery – a mountain amphitheatre with the spectacular, 4000m peaks and glaciers, ragged rocks, wonderful alpine flower paths and the charming pedestrian village at the valley bottom. There is a long list of summer activities to choose from, depending on your mood and abilities. We walked through the glacier to the Britannia Hut, tried Alpine Gorge via ferrata (only accessible with a mountain guide), hand fed marmots, trekked to Zermatt from Taschalp, walked the Almagellerhorn adventure trail with a 60-m-long suspension bridge, not to mention the scooter-bike rides and various daily treks. The owners suggested buying the citizen pass cards, which gives you a free pass for the most of Saas Fee area cableways and busses. http://files.gadmin.ch/49861
The chalet is in the really quiet area of the village; all shops are a max 10min. walking distance. The suitably sized living space with the kitchen/diner is upstairs. 3 bedrooms and shower are on the ground floor. The shower room is very modern; however slightly on the small side (you would need to negotiate the inward opening door). The kitchen is well equipped; we especially enjoyed preparing dinners on the raclette grill. The only drawback was that the cable TV didn’t work (but we hardly had time to watch telly anyway) and there was a temporary problem with an internet – we could only use a very slow open wifi connection from the neighbour (a big problem for teenagers). However, we are pretty sure once the internet/TV problems are resolved the Chalet Surprise would be a perfect base for summer hiking or winter skiing.
We have been told that we are the first guests in the chalet, so we would like to make a few suggestions: the duvets are slightly too thick and heavy for the summer time, and it would be nice to have more than one pan lid in the kitchen. Also the house inventory which lists the location of equipment would be very helpful in finding some utensils (we located UK sockets under the kitchen bench after a couple of days!).
Overall, we really enjoyed staying in this chalet, its quietness and practical layout. We would highly recommend it and we only wish we could spend more time there.
