“Fantastic Experience. ”
Reviewed 17 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

Location

-          Near Upper Bir, 50 meters ahead of main square, Village Gunehar.

-          Frank has created this place and manages it from his home which is 150 meters short of the village square. Contact him first.

Parking

-          The 4 Rooms Hotel is located along a narrow road leading to the village so parking may be a problem.

-          Cars may be parked at the village square which is just 50 meters away.

-          You may also park on the road where it is wide.

-          This road is used by a bus which visits the village every few hours all day, so avoid blocking its way. He is known to change the look of a wrongly parked car.

-          At the village square the bus needs to turn around, so park leaving space for it.

Concept

-          A 70-80 year old double storied, traditional Himachali house restored beautifully by Frank.

-          The renovated house retains the traditional architecture and feel with modern comforts incorporated within.

-          Four rooms with attached bathrooms. Three rooms on first floor and one on the ground floor.

-          Electric & solar power heated water.

-          Some bathrooms even have tubs.

-          It is like a guesthouse. There is no room service. For meals you can place orders with Frank and go over to 4 Tables (in his house) for meals.

-          Laundry service available.

-          No staff is present at the Hotel but Frank and his assistant are a phone call away. You won’t need them though.

-          The first floor rooms have a nice covered verandah with comfortable seating overlooking the valley.

-          In front of the hotel is a small garden tastefully created.

Facilities Provided

-          Sufficient toiletries (Liquid hand wash, shampoo, bath salt& liquid body wash). Towels & hand towles.

-          Hot water. Water is available 24 hours.

-          Electricity. (rare breakdowns may take place).

-          No fixed line telephones/intercom. Use mobiles to contact Frank. Connectivity is poor so messaging recommended.

-          Wifiinternet connection provided. Thick wall screening may occur.

-          No fans. Weather doesn’t demand one.

-          Spacious rooms and bathrooms.

-          No TV. Thankfully.

-          Reading material may be borrowed from Frank.

-          Tortoise coils, though one never required it.

-          Emergency light.

-          Coffee maker with sufficient tea/coffee.

-          Information, Art gallery & Menu cards.

-          Adventure sports, sightseeing, nature walks, camping, trekking etc. can be organized/guided by Frank on request.

-          Daily housekeeping services not provided. On demand only. Good for privacy & peace.

-          Umbrellas. Much required.

Rooms

-          Very comfortable, clean, airy and large. Same with the bathrooms.

-          Mud wall finish and traditional design.

-          Clean and good quality linen etc.

Highlights

-          Traditional and rustic feel without compromising on living comforts.

-          Great view and environment.

-          Gives the feel of village living as you are right in the middle of daily village activities around you, yet not disturbed by it.

-          Solitude and natural beauty.

-          Complete privacy as no staff hanging around. For those who like to be constantly fussed over by numerous staff, this isn’t the place for you and neither were you born in the right century.

-          Very comfortable.

-          Proximity to village, fields, mountain trails and streams besides being near Bir, Billing &SherablingMonastery area.

Advise

-          It’s a peaceful village with friendly, decent and cultured people. Try not to disturb the environment.

-          Wishing them “Namaste” is recommended. They are friendly enough to invite you inside their homes and offer you tea or food.

-          The villagers are broadminded but this isn’t Goa. Drink alcohol (following legal rules) discreetly. Over exposure & sun bathing in public not recommended.

-          The village is a “No Smoking” zone and punishable under law.

-          Leeches, snakes & scorpions are seen at times in rainy seasons although not encountered in the hotel so far. Bugs get attracted to light so keep mesh and glass doors & windows closed at all times. Keep salt with you during treks to get rid of leeches.

-          The hotel is safe but it’s advisable not to carry valuables or if you do, keep them with you when you leave the room as a precaution.

-          Always carry an umbrella.

Highly recommended for a stay at this hotel and dining at the 4 Tables. Stay for two days or more to fully soak in the environment and beauty. Truly a hidden gem.

If you are looking for Malls, chaos, markets, noise….this isn’t the place for you.

“Tranquil, peaceful and picturesque”
Reviewed 29 June 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Even though I belong to Palampur originally, I had never been to Bir/ Gunehar before Dec last year and in June 2015 spent a night at 4 Rooms. Beautifully designed and constructed, 4 Rooms gives you a rustic Himachali feel combined with modern comforts. There is no room service or round the clock catering as per the model so its important to prioritise expectations; only then can you appreciate the place for what its meant to be. While the food at 4 Tables is awesome; the ides is to also get a feel of the local culture, tastes and flavours. I recommend 4 Rooms highly to guests who are enamoured by the beauty and charm of this beautiful hill state; who like long walks and being one with nature and ofcourse for those who like coming back to a charming place to relax and soak in the beauty and tranquility of the little Gunehar Village.

Ok I have been here more than once... and still dying to go back. The 4Rooms Hotel is the perfect place to unwind and pamper yourself.
This visit, our group was taken on a trek and overnight camp to Rajgunda. I travel a lot and have to mention that I have never experienced such a well organised trek. The trek and the camp in itself was absolutely beautiful.
Food as usual was outstanding.
Service was always with a smile and every need of ours ( the group had city people with city demands ) was taken care of, which left everyone happy.
I repeat a must visit place....

the place looks great from the outside. frank the owner has spent time in europe and made efforts to build the house with consideration for the traveler's needs. however there is no service and meal times are kept to with strict regularity which may not suit everyone.

Management Response
18 Nov 2014
It appears that this guest is not used to living in villages and doesn't understand the concept of a Home-Stay OR 'being a guest' and even less has any appreciation of what we do here or what it takes to run a place like this in a remote Indian village.
We welcome everybody who is ready to abide by certain rules and timings that we have to set if we are to serve our guests properly. But we do not appreciate when guests get rude and abusive to the staff-- and to me when I, as in this case, try to explain why we need to plan certain things in advance.
We are neither 'unreliable" (yes, you DO need to plan your meals in advance with us since it needs to be prepared), 'unsafe' (I know of very few villages safer than this) nor 'unwelcoming' (in fact I spend a whole evening with this guest, after having cooked him a meal myself, trying to help him with his travel plans). But if you are, as our guest, incapable of understanding that this is our home and our village and that you are a guest in this space, you are welcome to go somewhere else. We did not create this space 'for consumption' and believe in a guest-host relationship based on interaction, understanding and cooperation. You are not a client but our guest!
I could have denied that this guest had stayed with us and so prevented his review from appearing but I chose not to precisely to make this point (the lost "rating stars" are well worth getting this message across!): 4rooms is not a typical and average all-under-one-roof hotel where you can ring for room service or just walk in and demand ‘service’ at the press of a button. We are a very small and dedicated team with a wide range of responsibilities who will do anything for you, but this requires a certain amount of patience and a spirit of cooperation from our guests. This I have clearly stated on this portal, on our website and in the info-brochure put out in each room. All our guests apart from this one appreciate the amount of care and work we put in to make the 4rooms and all our other village projects possible and the visit of our guests memorable. But if you are not interested in our activities, our village and our way of doing things, there are plenty of other, regular hotels around to chose from.

“Dream destination - Must Visit”
Reviewed 7 October 2014 for a stay in October 2014

A group of 8 loud people, we pre-booked our stay at The 4rooms and I must say our stars were lucky when we made this call. placed on the edge of a village called gunehar the property was exceptionally well done & had serene surroundings. The moment you step in you can actually feel the passion and love with which the place is done, and nothing less than the same is reflected in Frank's Hospitality. He makes the most amazing food ever which can be had at the beautiful The 4Tables restaurant. Speak to frank before going and he shall arrange for some adventurous activities for you (including paragliding - its a must ! ).
