Owner description: From the 10th century onwards, this town became an important link with the Slav peoples, especially those of Poland and Pomerania. During its period of greatest prosperity, from the 12th century onwards, the architecture of Bamberg strongly influenced northern Germany and Hungary. In the late 18th century it was the centre of the Enlightenment in southern Germany, with eminent philosophers and writers such as Hegel and Hoffmann living there.

The people of Bamberg asked the reigning authority to donate land to build their Rathaus. He agreed they could build it, but not on his land holdings. Not to be dissuaded they built their Rathaus in the middle of the river. Ingenious! A memorable building that is worthwhile to see.

This building is probably the iconic one of the town. Very unique with the yellow/white side over the river, bridges all around and painted sides this is more impressive than expected.

Bamberg is delightful. It is lively without being overcrowded. There are plenty of tempting cafes and pubs. The antique shops are superb! We really enjoyed 2 day here.

Bamberg is a great typical small German city to visit. The historical centre of Bamberg with the rivers is very charming.

Sometimes I think UNESCO World Heritage site status is given out a little too freely. That's not the case with Bamberg. This place is totally stunning and 100% deserves the status. Lots of beautiful timber-framed buildings, some of them medieval, cobbled streets, lovely river walks. And smoked beer!!
