New Year skiing break

Review of Le Castillan
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 5 Jan 2020
We stayed here for a week in December 2019 - Janurary 2020 after booking through Crystal Ski.

We arrived on the morning flight to Chambery and were greeted by the Crystal reps where we caught our transfer (Coach) to resort - around 2hrs 30mins. We arrived at Le Castillan and the check in process was very straight forward and completed within 5 minutes.

Our room was located on the 4th floor, we didn't have a balcony room which was a bit of a shame (as the weather was absolutly beautiful all week) but then again we opted for the standard room. From our window looking out the back of the hotel we could still see the piste. The room was very well appointed with a large amount of storage space and a lovely large, well lit bathroom. In the bathroom we had a bath which was greatly appreciated after a days skiing and a shower over said bath.

For the duration of our stay we had access to the hotels private boot room, with each room being allocated a locker at check in. We were allocated a thinner locker but there was more than enough space for all of our ski kit including 2 pairs of skis, boots and poles with enough space to leave our helmets to dry too!

The hotel has a small, but well appointed spa which is a fantastic place to relax and unwind after a day on the slopes! Although small the spa consists of two massage rooms a Sauna and Steam Room. The spa is open every day at 4pm with the ability to book massages if you so wish.

The staff at the hotel are all fantastic, all of the staff are welcoming and friendly, it really does have a homely & family feel. The waiting staff in the resturant were both fantastic who paid very close attention to our needs and requirements which made us feel even more at home.

We were staying on a Half Board basis throughout the week which consisted of a buffet style breakfast which was perfect for a morning on the slopes. Each evening we had a 4 course set menu which consisted of a Starter, Main, Regional cheese trolly & dessert. The dinner each night was fantastic with a wide range of food and was all freshly prepared. Every night when we sat down at dinner the staff asked if the menu was suitable due to diatry requirements, if there was an issue the staff we more than happy to change a dish.

The hotel is in a fantastic location a little from the centre of Alpe D'Huez but it is a 5-10min walk to the local lift which will take you to the main lift station (DMC). There is a ski shuttle bus (Route B) which stops 20m from the hotel which makes getting to the slopes in the morning very straight forward.

This is a fantastic hotel, child friendly and has a true family feel. We will most certianly be staying here again in the future.

My wife and I came here for a week long ski trip at the end of March. In all honesty we we were looking for a slightly cheaper option to our normal holidays as we were saving for other things this year.

We were booked in to La Castillan as part of a Crystal Ski package, and had expected to get something fairly perfunctory for the cost of the holiday as a whole. This couldn't be further from the truth.

The Castillan is a lovely, family-run hotel with incredibly friendly staff that are on hand whenever needed and are more than happy to accommodate you any way they can.

We stayed half-board - The breakfasts were great and had everything you needed;
4-5 types of fruit juice, regular coffee and a coffee machine for other types, fresh breads cakes and pastries every day, hot and cold meats, many cereals, yogurts, cheese, pancakes etc

Dinner was always a single option for half board guests. However, it was always 4 courses, very high quality with starter, main, cheese plate and desert. The Chef is incredible, and the meals were always fantastic. Although there is only one choice, the hotel will make great effort to accommodate any guests who don't like something on offer.

For example one night they offered fondue in place of the usual 4 course meal, but unfortunately I cannot eat fondue due to health issues. They did not even hesitate to offer me a full alternative meal and made me feel it was no effort at all.

The hotel is not technically ski in-ski out. But having walked around the entire resort (including all the different 'quarters') many times, I do not believe any of the hotels her offer ski in-ski out. However Le Castillan does offer a VERY short walk to an access slope that takes you down (you can ski it) to a chair lift - and that chair takes you to the top of Signal, from where it is either a super easy and gentle green or a challenging red (depending on your preference) down to the heart of the resort and all the main lifts.

Honestly, I can't understand why this hotel is only 3 star. The accommodation, staff and services should push it well beyond that in my opinion. I will not hesitate to come back.

Room tip: the higher the better for your room for privacy, views and noise.

Visited here with a group of friends (16 of us) and right from the start it was a dream co-ordinating with the hotel - prompt responses to e-mails and always willing to work with us to get a package that suited everyone.

Our arrival was at 2am in the morning but we were still greeted with a warm and welcoming smile which was a lovely feeling.

Rooms are functional - no mini-bars or sofas, but the beds are comfortably firm (exactly what you need after a day skiing), the bathroom is clean with a reasonably powered shower and the mountain view rooms do enjoy stunning scenery.

Breakfast offers a reasonable selection of cereals, pastries, and selected hot items. Dinners are set course - very tasty and team are always happy to cater for dietary issues. Bar is a comfy place to relax and balcony offers stunning views.

All the staff are extremely friendly and keen to assist wherever they can - all in all a fantastic base for exploring Alpe d’Huez.

The only reason I docked a star is you do have a flight of stairs to get to the reception, which is disheartening when you arrive in the early hours and have several bags with you. Also the balcony outside our room felt structurally unsound so having ventured out once, we never chanced it again for fear of it collapsing.

Hotel is extremely well situated in the old village with a ski track down to the chair that serves the signal station above the main village. This makes it virtually ski in and out.
The hotel staff who have run the hotel for a number of generations were both extremely friendly and helpful making my family ski week really special.
The restaurant quality is superb, 4 courses each night with an absolutely wonderful cheese trolley !
Rooms were very clean , tidy and roomy with nice size shower and bath facility en-suite. we were located on the 4th floor so lift was essential after a full day on the mountain. Boot room a real bonus with heated lockers and a very conveience ski equipment store with technician located adjacent and connected to the Hotel..a bonus!
A really nice south facing sun terrace and very comfortable bar lounge for relaxing and apres.

Room tip: 4th floor with balcony, en-suite and bath

This hotel is fantastic, I was debating between 4 and 5 on the review, but the friendly staff pushed it to a 5.

The room service (twice daily) is excellent, we had a twin room which was lovely. The bathroom was spacious, the only downside was the small bed but I am 6 ”2”. One of my reasons for debating a 4/5 star review was due to there being no kettle in the room. I think having these facilities would benefit a lot of guests.

The restaurant is exceptional, you’d be looking at a competitor for Michelin star. The staff were excellent! I wasn’t a fan of the meals on a Tuesday and Thursday, apparently this was a tradition. Tuesday was a salad to start and beef stew, didn’t find it filling following a day of skiing. Thursday was cheese fondue which I’m not a fan of, but this is my personal opinion. But you’re local to restaurants so we went to Smithys Tavern up the road (recommend visiting here). Breakfast offers cereal, scrambled / boiled egg, bacon, pancakes, fruit, yoghurt, pastries etc, so plenty of choice.

Overall, I would highly recommend staying here. Value for money and the staff are so welcoming. This hotel would be my first choice if i visit Alpe D’Huez again.

Loved staying here with our two grown up sons. Our room faced the mountain with a lovely balcony and the rooms were spotlessly clean. Thanks to the staff who were friendly and helpful at all times!
Location was great, very close to the ski slopes and bars.

Room tip: Higher floor overlooking the mountain is best
