Good hotel. Virtually ski in/out.

We stayed at Le Chaix on 4th Jan for a week.Newly renovated rooms including bathroom. Bigger than average with balcony.Plenty of storage/wardrobe space.Beds firm but comfy.Nice fresh white linen.Room tidied daily. We booked through Crystal and their details state that rooms have a safe. They don't. TV in room but no English channels.Good strong wifi in room. Great location.Basically, walk across the road and onto a green to take us down to the chair lifts.Friendly, helpful staff.
The restaurant is on the top floor so lovely views over the slopes at mealtimes. We found plenty to fill us up at meal times. Breakfast buffet had lovely fresh breads, croissants, pastries, cereals, juices, coffee, tea. Boil your own eggs in the equipment provided.Equipment to make your own pancakes too. Though no fried eggs, sausage or bacon for we Brits. Dinner was a three course set meal. Well cooked. Well presented. Varied , fresh and hot. On one occasion, the main course was veal. One guest refused it so the kitchen quickly produced an alternative while the rest of us quietly enjoyed the tasty, tender meat.
The only problem we had was with Chambery airport. It's seriously prone to bad weather conditions. Ours was the only flight to arrive (5 hours late) on that day. It's also a shambles. Completely ill-equipped for the amount of people during the ski season.

Very disappointed that they couldn’t cater for vegetarians. My daughter is a vegetarian and all they offered was an omelette or a plate of fried potatoes. We weren’t offered pasta, rice, nothing. I read a review that said the chef made some vegan dishes so I thought it would be ok but no apparently. Incredible to think they could do vegan dishes but not vegetarian. It ruined our holiday.

You just can’t beat this hotel for location.

Situated a few hundred metres away from the ski lifts, and at the end of the legendary Alpe d’Huez cycling climb. You have amazing views of the mountains and are in walking distance to a range of eating options.

The rooms are clean and have most of what you need. Coffee and tea in the room would have been a bonus.

Great service at reception.

Good
Location:50m from nursery slope then ski down to main lifts.
Room: Larger than the average pine panelled French resort twin with a good sized balcony and a beautifully refurbished shower room. However, we did find a third bed under one of the beds and that would have been a very different matter.
Breakfast: good cold buffet but the ‘hot’ options are limited to boiled eggs and pancakes (both do it yourself). Good selection of fresh breads and pastries.
Wine: Can’t complain at ‘Mas del Rey’ at £11.50 a bottle.
Better than average:
Spacious room numbered lockers, plenty of seating but lacks heating/drying facilities.
Bad:
Evening meal. Small portion set three course meal with no options. The menu is designed to limit the need for catering staff eg most starters and desserts are cold prep. Temperature of “hot” food would best be described as tepid.
Very bad:
This is not a placed for those needing gluten free food. Hotel director claimed nearest GF bread was in Grenoble 122km away - actually the little supermarket 5 minutes walk away had three varieties. If pasta is in the main course then you get a mixture of lettuce leaves as a substitute, not good if you have had the salad starter. If pastry is in the dessert you get ice cream.
Overall
I would say that this is a better than average 2* bed and breakfast hotel but shocked at the rack rates displayed at reception: €175 per room and €11 per person for breakfast.

I have just spent the week in alpe dhuez with my son - our second week skiing. We stayed 7 nights half board. The hotel was basic but that was fine. Good location next to the slopes. Food was ok - perhaps a bit traditional for our tastes. Staff friendly. My only quibble was that the balcony door didn’t lock and that we were woken up one night by a fire alarm (false alarm luckily) - can’t really blame the hotel for that though! Overall I would recommend if you are looking for basic no thrills accommodation.

We’ve just got back from a New Years stay at le Chaix. We can’t recommend this hotel enough for a simple yet comfortable stay. The hotel itself is situated right next to the slopes - just a short walk and you can hop on a green (perfect for finding your feet) down to the main lift area. Our room (102) was a lot more spacious then we’d expected from reading previous reviews - there was plenty of room for 2 of us, adequate wardrobe space and separate toilet and bathroom. Very clean and comfortable! We had a balcony and a decent view of some of the slopes - nice to sit out late afternoon and people watch and see the snow ploughs of the evening.
The restaurant we couldn’t get over - fantastic selection in the continental breakfast, we were more than satisfied everyday, although the food is the same each morning. We stayed on a half board basis - which included a set 3 course meal every night and a set 5 course meal on New Years. I mean it when I say, every single course of every meal was fantastic. We loved the food and mainly had house wines which again were great.
All staff - from director to waitresses were beyond friendly and approachable. They got to know you as the week went on but also we’re not too encroaching. We got engaged during our visit and the staff were so pleased and made just enough fuss of us.
If we were to return to the sort again, we would stay in this hotel without any question. It surpasses its 2 star rating in every way so don’t let that put you off.
Thank you again for an enjoyable stay!
