“Rural but not isolated pool with a view”
Reviewed 15 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

My wife and I and two daughters (17&18) spent a week here after having spent 2 weeks in southern Portugal.

We were glad when we found the villa! It's a steep narrow drive down to the villa but Joao's instructions (along with coordinates in the sat nav) were good.
First impressions are what a fantastic setting it (and particularly the pool) has. The garden is beautiful and well attended (by Joao's father who watered it in the morning generally long before we were up; he also speaks German should you meet him and speak as little Portuguese as I do).

The vila is small and cosy but we really only used it to sleep in as we lived outside all day. However I would imagine the large woodburner would keep it very snug in the winter. The thick walls, made of solid granite blocks, meant that the interior was nice and cool during the very hot afternoons provided we kept the shutters and door closed during the day.

The pool was refreshing and clear (I think it's salt water but couldn't taste neither salt nor chlorine) and one of the highlights was floating on a lilo watching 4 forrest fires on the opposite bank of the river Vouga being put out by helicopters. The Bombeiros act very swiftly there! The pool and garden are pretty private - even though you will hear village life around you, you will not see it. There is another villa being built just above this one and to start with I thought the noise and loss of privacy would be annoying. But the garden is carefully planted to maintain privacy and the noise simply became part of the background village noise (along with cockerels, dogs barking, children laughing and even the sound of "here comes the bride" of a local wedding - but all distant enough not to be invasive). There was also a drystone wall being constructed on the way up to the village and it was a pleasure to see the skills, which are evident everywhere there, in action.

So what's to do there (other than relaxing by the pool)?

Well we spent one day in Porto which we enjoyed. However I decided to drive the scenic way back along the Douro valley to make it a round trip and it took nearly 4 hours (ie over double time) due to a road closure caused by an accident but mainly because of the very windy roads.

The other main activities are walking and eating! There are several excellent walks signposted within walking distance of the villa. svv6 takes you through a mix of woodland and local village life (eg old ladies hand threshing maise) and is highly recommended. svv8 takes you higher into the hills and is mainly woodland walking. We had to abandon svv7 as it seemed too overgrown to us. Start early as they are obviously all pretty hilly and you don't want to be doing that in the heat of the day.

Up in Couto de Esteves there is a Restaurant (above the Club Ibiza bar - don't be put off by the name) which is good and generous (half portions are often enough) and the lady who runs it also speaks French. But the best restaurant we found was Restaurante Quinta do Barco in Sever do Vouga (just west of the bridge over the Vouga on the N16 - and not where tripadvisor shows it to be!) which offered great food and the waitress spoke English. Finally the bbq at the villa is great if you want to cook something yourself

So if you are looking for a rural and very Portuguese experience, then this villa would suit you well. Do try the walks, especially sv6 (leaflet in the villa and board giving the route map in the village). Or just laze by the pool and enjoy the sunshine and peace. We all felt that the villa and village life grew on us during the week. It was a good contrast with southern Portugal and we thoroughly enjoyed our week there.

Although we never met Joao (he doesn't live locally) he did call us the evening we arrived and again before we left to check that everything was ok.

Final tips:
1. although listed, there is no dishwasher should that matter to you (it didn't to us)
2. it wasn't clear to me that Joao's father (who lives locally) had a spare key, so we kept the key in the door (outside) at all times during the day to avoid getting locked out.
3. Mobile signal (including 3G) worked well outside of the villa

If you decide to stay there, I hope you have a great time!

Thank you so much for your comment! You and your family will always welcome at Casa do Bouço Velho.
About your questions, the pool water has chlorine, however we keep it at minimum level. We also don´t like the smell of too much chlorine.
There's really no dishwasher. It was a mistake on the site, already corrected.
We have a spare key, but as the door doesn't open from outside without the key, we recommend our visitors to keep the key outside.
