“A perfect family villa in the Bay of Naples”

I can’t recommend Villa Iole enough: quite simply it’s perfect.

The villa is located on the edge of a wooded valley that makes up the south-western side of the Vico Equense peninsular. The upstairs consists of two large double bedrooms, each with a small walled balcony, separated by a bathroom and the stairs. The ground floor consists of a small kitchen/dining area, a second bathroom, and the spacious tiled living room which includes a double sofabed. The villa is evidently a family home rather than just a rental house and has a warm ambience. Sliding doors lead directly from the living room onto the terrace and round to the garden along the entrance side of the villa. Most of the time is spent on the wonderful terrace which has two sun loungers, a swing-sofa, table and chairs, and from which there are spectacular views across the valley and the Bay of Naples with the islands of Ischia and Procida in the distance. Welcome shade is provided by the vines and the ancient olive and lemon trees, the bougainvillea-covered rock wall and the villa itself – with a cooling sea breeze which means the villa never gets too hot.

The town of Vico Equense is a short stroll along the coastal road, past a small shady park with beautiful views of a cliff-top church with Vesuvius beyond. This leads round to the town centre which is marked by a dolphin fountain in the middle of the crossroads with cafes on each of the quadrants. Straight over leads to the fishmongers and food stores as well as the excellent Pizza a Metro which has a takeaway section (however, the prize for the very best takeaway pizza – La Primavera con Crudo - has to go to the Hotel Mary, directly above the Villa Iole. Turning left at the fountain leads to another spectacular view of Vesuvius, and round to the entrance of the Circumvesuviana railway station which we used for all our travel needs. It’s incredibly cheap compared to the UK (£3 to Naples and £1 to Pompeii or Sorrento) and runs every half hour from about 07:00 to 21:30.

Accessing the beaches took a while to work out. Turn sharp left out of the villa, descend the steps and sloping road, before going up a short flight of steps between villas turning left to a locked metal door (key provided), through which public steps wind all the way down to the sea. The first small beach consists of black volcanic sand and rocks and has a wooden hut with tables and chairs which is deserted after sunset – very relaxing. We had difficulty finding the main public beach – it’s reached by walking beyond the first beach, through the harbour and along past the Hotel El Axidie towards the cliffs that mark the headland. The beach is of yellow sand and is free if you stay to the left of the rented sun-lounger enclosure.

“Gorgeous view a little tough to get to”

Giuseppe (the owner) was constantly in touch and solved every issue we had. The Villa is pretty much as the pictures indicate except they fail to mention it is down a very steep driveway that is tough to navigate and there are a flight of steps that would be difficult for a person with physical disabilities. I would definitely stay again if I was going to be on the Amalfi Coast. It's close to everything and easy to get to and from.
