We were told this was a really good restaurant. The menu was limited and the service was slow. There are better places to try if you are in Sulmona.

We arrived in Sulmona on a Sunday, which isn’t necessarily a good idea! To arrive the day there is a food festival is great fun, it a number of restaurants who open on Sundays were closed.

Our hotel tried all their recommended restaurants but all were closed that evening - in the end they suggested we try a restaurant they had recommended before, but a number of guests had had problems.

We went with an open mind, and the first course, gazpacho and rabbit tagliatelle were very good. We particularly asked for a 20 minute break between courses for the lamb we had ordered.

We are still not sure whether they just went ahead and cooked it, or if the fact they claimed to have cooked it 2 days before and heated it up - under the guise of low temperature cooking- but eirpther way it was absolutely dreadful. There was so little meat on it - which was so tough we need a sharper knife. The accompanying zucchini (courgettes) were stone cold the roast potatoes over cooked and dripping in oil.

We asked for the manager who claimed not to speak English - although he did so when we arrived! Isabella, the English speaking waitress - an absolute delight - was drawn into the discussion. We said we were not prepared to eat the meal and given the behaviour of the so called manager, decided to ask for the bill which came with a deduction of €9 instead of the cost of the 2 meals, €30!

We asked to see the owner, who spoke no English - or at least claimed not to. Via Isabella we explained the food was main course was dreadful and we did not expect to pay as we’d had 1 of the 5 small pieces we managed to remove from the bones (it would be called lamb rack in the UK) and 1 mouthful of each of the veg.

The owner Fredericka was unbelievable - at one point suggesting she’d call the police because we only gave her the amount to cover the first course, wine and mineral water. We contacted out hotel who spoke good English and it appears one of the owners told her he would pay the difference.

We were not happy about this - she now has carts Blanche to sell rubbish food and get away with it.

The one good thing from this experience was meeting Isabella, whose grandfather left Italy for Venezuela some years ago and she has come back “home”. Her English is extremely good and in our view she doesn’t deserve to work for someone like Fredericka.

Our advice would be to avoid this place at all costs - we‘ve seldom had bad experiences like this, but this one will take some time to forget.

However the silver lining is we spent time at the Street food festival in the Main Street, had great gelato and coffee in a super atmosphere.

We have eaten here many times and this time were very disappointed. The menu has changed and was a lot to choice from. Antipasto was ok and then there was a very long pause til we received our pizza. We ordered buffalo mozzarella, mushrooms, with red sauce. First, the sauce was not pizza sauce it was more a tomato sauce you would use for eggplant parmigiana. The dough was tuff and under cooked. Felt it was a bit over priced. Not sure if we would return or not. Very disappointing.

We had heard from our hotel that this restaurant had slipped over the last couple of years. But it was a Monday night and choices were limited. We had booked and were seated at our table and then waited..... Eventually we asked a stag member for menus which were unceremoniously dropped on the table. Then we waited for someone to taker or order. We thought we ordered a single Primi to share - received a double serve (after a long wait). After a long wait, our pasta dishes were incorrect.
Food quality was OK - but relatively expensive. Wine recommended by our waiter was good. Overall a disappointing experience exacerbated by very poor service.

A restaurant very close to our accommodation at Residenza Vico Amato. Had great pizzas watching the pizza maker and the wood oven. Simple but tasty toppings and great bases
