Isola di Mozia (Mothia)/ San Pantaleo

A number of excavations are available to view from the early civilisations. A sort boat ride gets you there, then its all flat walking. There is also an amazing museum where some of the finds are displayed. Disappointing that the cafe was closed, when its advertised hours showed it should have been open.

I believe the possibility to see the unique Greek statue "Giovane di Mozia" ("Young of Mozie") inside the Whitaker museum is alone worth the trip to Mozia. Add the rest of the collection inside the museum, the wonderful natural setting, the importante of the Phoenician archeological site, the view on the salt pans when going back to main Sicily with the boat: absolutely among the best things to do while in Marsala. If you take the boat back to spend sunset-hour by Riserva dello Stagnone, even better.
The boat ride is 5 euros (two-ways), and only takes 5 minutes; save the ticket to come back. To enter the island you have to additionally pay 9 euros (well worth the value for me).

One of the Stagnone island where phoenician ruins are in the archaeological park. A nice and small museum with an ancient kouros statue. Wonderful sunset.

Joseph Whittaker's island came alive through our incredible 5-star local guide, Elena Rutkowska Buscemi. With a book of photographs in hand, she guided us from what we were seeing to what the island looked like in Phoenician times --- including an underwater causeway and the underwater foundation blocks for walls.
I agree with another reviewer who said Mozia is an unexpected treasure. We watched workers brushing off soil to uncover stones in a temple and visited the small (but growing) museum. We also sampled the terrific wine from the Grillo grapes grown on the island.
Guides can arrange for lunch (and Grillo) on the island, which is reached by a very short boat ride from the Trapani Salt Flats. That said, we did not walk around the whole island and opted to tour along one area of the shoreline, visit the house, the archeological digs, the 'fresh water' pond, museum and lunch. Our tour guide also showed us the Trapani Salt Water flats. Terrific.
