Lecce is still adjusting to tourism, and this has always been a less wealthy part of Italy, but now it is becoming a 'hidden gem'. The excavation here is ancient and fascinating: it can't be compared to Rome, because Rome has always been the hub with loads of investment in tourism, but if you sit in the piazza at night with the locals, who realise it and the city's significance, it is a great experience and opens your eyes to historical importance of Lecce and Puglia in the past and today!

Amazingly rediscovered when the Piazza Sant'Oronzo was worked on between the wars but sadly over restored using concrete. Nevertheless, a unique artefact to have in the middle of a city.

It was such a fantastic place that we could stay there for hours waiting to see coming out the gladiators of longtime ago.

In a central location adjoining piazza Sant'Oronzo, excavations have opened up part of the Roman amphitheatre, sufficient for some small events, but almost three-quarters of the total arena is still buried under modern buildings, roads and on the east side the chiesa di Santa Maria della Grazia. The modern banking architecture surrounding its setting somewhat detracts from its history but no doubt in due time the full arena will be opened up.
Unfortunately, at the time of our visit, the Colonna di Sant'Oronzo adjoining was covered up presumably for restoration work - although it is not related to the anfiteatro being a rebuild of a column gifted from Brindisi. Similarly, the adjoining loggia - palazzo del Sedile and tiny chiesa di San Marco are not relevant to the anfiteatro but at least they add some historic interest.
Mildly interesting but compared with many other great Roman antiquities of similar purpose, it needs much more work to bring out its full glory.

Although it occupies a fine location in the centre of Leccen this ampitheatre is rather unexciting and does little to set the heart or mind on fire. They are well maintained but gives a very clinical perspective of an ampi- theatre. No real feel for original use.
