“empty and sad”

Reviewed 19 June 2018

Interesting only as a reminder of tragedy of the earthquake. All buildings are reinforced with steel or wooden beams, there are some ruins nearby. But in the end it is an empty street/neighbourhood of an empty city center. No people, no tourists, no shops, no cafes... Even stranger though some of them moved long after the quake, e.g. in 2012, from not damaged buildings (at least it looks like this).

Walking along this street gives you a sad feeling, about the destruction which took place in 2009. It was not only destruction of the buildings, but also a big part of the economy. The whole middle class has disappeared. Before 2009 this was a very busy main street with (exclusive) shops and people every where, now not a single shop is there. It's more or less a ghost town. I (and many Aquila residents) doubt if it will ever get back the grandeur of a decade ago.

Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the main Avenue that traverse the whole city. At the moment I am writing this review, you have mostly 2 different aspects: restored buildings, that brought back the ancient beauty", and some building that are going to be restored. Different other attractions are strictly linked with it: Piazza Duomo, Piazza Palazzo, Piazzetta Chiarino, Villa Comunale.
