Just back from this wonderful charming hotel! We had a lovely room with a balcony and a view to die for. The staff were all charming and nothing was a problem. The breakfast was served on the terrace overlooking the lake and was exceptional with a wonderful array of bread and pastries and a great choice of fruit, cold meats, etc.The peace and tranquility of this hotel is amazing and we loved it.

The positives:
- Friendly and attentive service
- Multi-lingual staff
- On-site parking
- Good amenities (SPA, swimming pool, gym)
- Peaceful and relaxing setting for dinner and breakfast on the outdoor terrace during spring-autumn overlooking the lake
- Short drive from Salo’
- A desk which can organize local tours
- Wheelchair accessible throughout the hotel as far as I could tell
- Fantastic if you want to practice your German language skills as I only heard German guests throughout the hotel.

The areas for improvement:
- We had dinner at the fish restaurant. The flavour of the fish (we had scallops and yellowtail) was average and yet you are paying fine dining prices.
- You come to this hotel for the service and the location, but I certainly don’t advise you to have high expectations of the room. We were in room 218, I have been in low-end 4 star hotels and high end 3 star hotels with similar or better standards of room. I have been lucky to travel for business to a number of 5 star hotels (Ritz Carlton, Conrad, Hilton, Marriotts, Mandarin Oriental) in Europe and Asia. They will often have as a minimum the following amenities in the room: kettle with coffee and tea and sometimes a nespresso machine; welcome drink on arrival; ironing board and iron in the room; shoe shine in the room; speakers with docking points for ipad and iphone; bath; rain-forest style shower heads; electric window blinds; USB charging plugs next to the bed. In summary: the Grand Hotel Fasano won’t offer any of the above in your room, the room I stayed in had extremely basic décor (e.g. the old wooden wardrobe with what looks like termite bites on the exterior) and a tiny bathroom. Yes this is a colonial hotel and comparing it to a Conrad chain built only 20 years ago might seem a little unfair, but you can incorporate new technology and updates in a subtle and under-stated way to make the rooms more comfortable. It just goes to show that a 5-star rating is very subjective and can vary noticeably across geographies.

This place has such a lovely vibe! A beautiful hotel with stunning grounds. Sun beds lining the lake with staff serving drinks. Gorgeous breakfast area with lots of choice, and a terrace for pre/post dinner drinks. The rooms are elegant, clean, air conditioned. If you can get one with a balcony over looking the lake it is so worth it - the view is insane!

We took a boat trip one day (organised with the hotel) and it was amazing - would definitely recommend. The restaurant where they suggested we stop for lunch was a highlight.

But the most special thing about this hotel is the staff. They were friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. We changed rooms and added a day before arriving - they were really quick to respond and made the whole process easy. The concierge was brilliant everyday we were there.

We loved it!

1) We traveled with 3 adults, so we booked 1 superior room with lake view and 1 single room without.
Yes, we booked through a travel agency - I expect them to blame it all on that.
The lake view room was nice - a bit small but everything you need was there. Tip: coffee making facilities would be nice.
Do NOT book a single room. They are very outdated, very small, dark, sad and even depressing. Definately NOT worth the money. When allergic to dust mites, notice well in advance; there are only 2 single rooms without carpet.
We booked 6 months in advance and asked for the rooms to be as close to each other as possible... They were on different floors...
2) Common areas are very hot. Airconditioning in room works good.
3) Cleaning of the rooms is OK; 2 times a day fresh towels, bottle of water every evening. Please, check the amenities. After day 2 we didn't have shampoo or bath foam, but 6 bottles of body cream. We told housekeeping, but it was the same the next day.
4) Dinner in Il Fagiano: choose à la carte. Making dishes a little less complicated would change a lot and do good to the quality (and yes, we went to Michelin starred restaurants before; but what we had doesn't even come close).
5) Lunch by the pool / lakeside: great food ! Make this available in the evening and less guests would choose to eat out.
6) Bar: very nice atmosphere, great views, nice drinks. Consistency in offering a little snack is lost (not before 22h, the next day nothing was possible, the other day everything was possible from 21h,...).
7) Breakfast is great. A lot of choice, also vegan and gluten-free options, à la carte eggs. Tip: choose espresso or cappuccino and not the already prepared one (Americano).
8) Personnel does what you ask for.
Everyone tried to speak German to us, but we don't speak German - we speak Dutch. I speak Italian, but most of the time staff persevered in English or German.
9) The lady showing us our room didn't say a word - awkward !
We weren't told or shown were the breakfast area was, the pool,... a little guided tour through the hotel would have been nice (and also what we expect from a 5-star hotel).
10) WiFi is terrible.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and our holiday and with a little adjustments, the hotel could live up to it's 5-star luxury rating. Location and hotel grounds are everything...

Room tip: Go for rooms on the lake side - do NOT book a single room
