“Fabulous Ferrara”
Reviewed 17 March 2015 for a stay in March 2015

What a great location, a wonderful apartment with a charming and helpful host.

We spent 2 months here and were sad to leave. The apartment is spacious and works for a long stay it has been renovated to a good standard but has not lost any of the charm from the original building.

We also took the car parking available. Luckily Luigi sent us size limits for the car as the space and entrance are very tight, but better than on street parking and a lot less expensive.

The town of Ferrara is a jewel. We enjoyed walking the different routes around the city, often getting slightly lost, which was part of the fun, enjoying the cobbled streets and alley ways. Walking the city wall is fantastic. The different markets were always worth a visit. Early evening in the centre was great, such a nice atmosphere and of course taking an aperitivo! Because the apartment is on the edge of the main piazza's it was easy to be in the centre of town in (literally) 2 minutes. The town has a huge choice of places to eat and of course great ice cream is everywhere.

This Ferrara location was great for seeing the region. Venice is about an hour away by either car or train (the station is about 25mins walk) so you can go lots! Florence about 2hrs, Bologna 40 mins. Ravenna, Verona, Medina, Parma and we discovered lots of places not on the tourist route.

As mentioned earlier Luigi was a kind and helpful host when we had some problems with the electrical supply he was straight there to assist.

We were so glad that we looked outside of Bologna (our original preferred location) as Ferrara gives a wonderful taste of Italy and this apartment makes it a pleasurable stay.

“A Wonderful Apartment in a Midieval Town”

This was an ideal apartment from which to explore the Emilia-Romagna province. The apartment was spacious, up-to-date, and well-maintained. The few minor problems we had were quickly addressed by the owner.
It's located in a historic building, but has all modern conveniences. The apartment has a master bedroom with a queen-size bed, and a second bedroom with two twin beds. The sofa in the living room, which does make into a sleeper, is not really adequate for sleeping for a prolonged stay. Two cots are provided, and our grandchildren slept on their mats on the floor.

It's a block from the Estense castle and the cathedral. It's a 5 minute walk to Meta market, and restaurants abound in the area.

It's a direct 10 minute bus ride from the apartment to the train station, from which there are direct connections to Venice, Padua, Ravenna, Bologna, and points south.

The only significant problem was the initial presence of sugar ants, which came in from the beautiful courtyard. The problem was easily resolved by spraying the ant mounds in the courtyard, and along the ant trails outside and up the columns to the second floor. This needed to be done about every 10 days to two weeks.

Internet service was excellent and consistent (DSL), and heating was comfortable in early spring. There were a few outages of the cooling as it was getting started up for the summer, but was resolved by the building management within a day. (This is not in the apartment owner's control.)

We really enjoyed the apartment, location, the city, and easy access to interesting places in the region. The weekend markets are phenomenal in their variety and quality.

We were there for Palio month and watched the pageantry, the procession, the flag-dancing competition, and, of course, the ultimate foot, donkey, and horse races. We also witnessed the Mille Miglia, which was an amazing spectacle.

The townspeople were friendly, helpful, and delightful to spend time with. The city's residents use bicycles to get around, as the area is very flat, so remember to look behind you before changing direction.

We highly recommend walking the wall around the city with the local people of all ages.
