Villa Aba is one of 3 modern properties on a large plot, sharing with Villa Susanna and Villa Marty. The rural location is very peaceful and secluded, but less than 10 minutes' drive from shops and restaurants at Castiglione del Lago. Each villa has its own decent-sized pool, and access to communal areas with swingsand a slide, a play house, ping pong table and acres of space for children to run round.
Villa Aba is structurally extremely well designed and built, and the owner has taken trouble to present it well. You can eat outdoors very comfortably at the patio table at any time of day. There are all the facilities you would expect to find in a modern holiday villa, including a fully fitted kitchen with microwave and dishwasher. Off one of the two downstairs bedrooms there is a utility room with a washing machine, plus a shower and toilet specially designed for disabled use. The other 2 bedrooms are en-suite and there is a family bathroom downstairsas well.
In contrast to the modern design, the interior furniture is mainly traditional; dark heavy wooden pieces predominate, which may not be to everybody's taste. There was only one 2-seater sofa in the large open plan living room, so comfy seats were at a premium - although the patio has a lovely double swing-seat. The living room could have done with a few more lights to brighten it up in the evenings. The flat screen TV was quite small, and there was no DVD player. We paid extra for wireless internet access, but it was slow and flaky, just about OK for email but forget downloading a film or uploading photos. There was no air conditioning, so the upstairs bedroom could possibly get very hot in mid-summer as the ceiling has no insulation, although in May it was fine. The windows have shutters and screens to keep out heat and insects.
There were bikes provided, although we didn't use them. The villa was perfectly clean, the charming owner came every day to service the pools, and everything worked. The owner was very helpful, although as she spoke little or no English we had to communicate in a mixture of Italian and French. There was no holiday information at all in the house, so we nearly missed the Wednesday morning market in Castiglione - which does have a tourist office.
We shared Villa Aba with my son and his young family, and we had decent weather so the pool really came into its own and everybody had a great time. We'd be interested in coming back next year, hoping a few of the negative things might be addressed. If we'd been stuck indoors, the limitations I've noted might have become a significant problem and changed the rating I'd give. However, a few alterations might have given it an 'excellent' rating.
