In 1551 the King of Portugal send a special gift to Kaiser Maximilian of Austria. The trip went from Lissabon to Barcelona and from Genua to Vienna. The gift was an elephant caught in India and guarded by soldiers and attendants.. By taking the Brennerpas they get stuck for more then a week in the snow in Bresanone. The landlord of the inn where they stayed was smart. He renamed his inn in The Elephant. In this way giving a marketing boost to his place.
The food is very good in the old way. Nothing to fancy. The service is classical polite but not shy. The atmosphere is friendly in a wooden Austrian style but touched with a Italian elegance.
