In 1551 the King of Portugal send a special gift to Kaiser Maximilian of Austria. The trip went from Lissabon to Barcelona and from Genua to Vienna. The gift was an elephant caught in India and guarded by soldiers and attendants.. By taking the Brennerpas they get stuck for more then a week in the snow in Bresanone. The landlord of the inn where they stayed was smart. He renamed his inn in The Elephant. In this way giving a marketing boost to his place.
The food is very good in the old way. Nothing to fancy. The service is classical polite but not shy. The atmosphere is friendly in a wooden Austrian style but touched with a Italian elegance.

I have long been a fan of the South Tirol Region of Italy and especially of the area between Bolzano (Bozen) and Bressanone (Brixen). When I think of dining in this area, great local wine, traditional cooking, and cozy wooden rooms with ceramic ovens come to mind. The restaurant at The Elephant Hotel has all this but so much more. The new chef is, of course, up on the traditional dishes, but also adds intriguing modern twists. The wine selection is superb including standard selections from France, Germany, Spain, and the US, but featuring a stunning selection of truly superb (and often limited production) wines from the region. Michael Falk the sommelier is charming and extremely knowledgeable and Lenore who overseas the dining room is a pleasure. I would recommend this restaurant to any of my friends and be confident that they will have a fabulous experience.

Amazing setting for a group of our friends along with my Wife and I to enjoy some incredible wine and food together.

Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, service was outstanding. We selected local produce where possible and were rewarded with tasty well prepared dishes and beautiful red wines.

If you have time, visit cellar and historical items on display.

We all really enjoyed our night and would highly recommend this place for your special Occassion.

Creative presentation, exquisitely prepared meal, excellent service in a remarkable historic hotel. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The tables are beautifully set with white linens, fresh flowers and real candles. Our wine was decanted in a gorgeous vessel.

Recommendations for sparkling wine aperitif and local LeGrein with dinner were on point. Tomatoes and an abundance of flowers are grown in the hotel garden. So much attention to detail throughout. Treat yourself to cocktails in the adjoining bar. All of the public spaces are welcoming and interesting. This is an experience not to be missed in beautiful Brixen, Bressanone.
