It is nice to go on a warm day, it is beautiful, historic and an amazing spot to watch the sunrise or sunset. Looks really like a scenario of a movie.

There are guided tours in the afternoon (first tour at 4pm). If there are enough tourists waiting for a tour in the morning, they will run the tour already in the morning a first time, but you never know.

If you don't have a guided tour, you won't see a lot. You will need some explanations to understand what you see. There are ruins you can see from outside, but you wouldn't be allowed to enter the buildings without a guide. If you're lucky (as we were) you find someone who guides you in a private tour, then you can probably see some hidden places. If you're not that lucky to have a private guide, you will definitely need to join a group with a guide.

The Cittadella is a huge fortress, and military 18th century stronghold.
But now it lays in very poor conditions.
And, be careful, in spite of expo 2015 advertisment it will be close next summer because of work in progress

"The Citadel" I firmly believe it is the top attraction of the city and as far as I know I think it was also included in the waiting list for the screening of the UNESCO world heritage.
Recently opened to the public and dismissed on 2005 it was for decades a military zone active and absolutely off limits and no-fly zone, but now abandoned and open to everyone willing to visit it.
Built more than two centuries ago, here is the evidence of the passage of Napoleon and his French troops, but also for the WWI and WWII outpost, in short, is a historically valuable place. You can access the inside every day, but if you want to visit it deeper I think it can only possible on Sunday when volunteers organize free tour inside the Citadel with relevant and comprehensive explanations and historical background.
The guided tour takes about 90 minutes, visiting most of the outside, the underground and the areas that it has been built during Napoleon's invasion, still everything is as it was at the time. Some exhibits of WWII are still tangible, including in some places bullets signs on the walls. But this place needs a rapid intervention of reclamation and restoration, otherwise the risk of losing this beautiful site is very high.
Also within it there is a big park where occasional performances are held, concerts and many other activities, there is a small museum of firefighters, a very interesting museum of electricity and many other interesting things.

We stopped in Alessandria for the first time as we'd driven past and seen the advertised star shaped Cittadella many times whilst passing on the motorway. We were the only visitors and were able to wander around the outside of the buildings at leisure. This was in the morning and the only guided tours were held after four in the afternoon. The area covered by the barracks was vast and the buildings were in various stages of decay. Some were in the process of restoration but it was obvious that not much money had been spent on this. There were plaques giving a glimpse of the importance of the citadella during the first and second world wars. It would be a very interesting visit for a military historian. There was a childrens playground and lots of space/parking. Some attempt had been made to create a nature trail.
