Always nice 'Coming back ' to this great little grotto in Valchiavenna.
The weather was on our side, so we decided to sit outside and enjoy lunch. Great flavours as usual, not too experimental cooking, local products and beautiful Nebbiolo at €60 a head, yes, definitely on the expensive side but worth every cent! Grazie!!

It was the wine of Mamete Prevostini that brought us here.

Before leaving for Italy we wanted to have a few winery tastings lined up, and because we were specifically traveling to the Valtellina Valley, we didn't want to miss visiting the Prevostini winery.

When we arranged our tasting our contact suggested a tour then tasting with lunch at Crotasc. While we knew we would not be disappointed with the wine, we were blown away by lunch.

The setting is in the family's original restaurant that is over 70 years old (hope I'm getting that right), but the food is fresh and modern. We started with a sampling of local meats and cheeses, all very good, but it was the honey that was really the highlight. You could seemingly taste the surroundings.

Moving from the traditional to the new, at least for me, was the pumpkin ravioli with candied fruit and mustard. While pumpkin ravioli might not be a departure, the bright combination of candied fruit and mustard provided a nice contrast to the subtle pumpkin.

The beauty in traveling to Italy is being able to taste hyper local foods, and feel the synergy of all the ingredients, and that idea is certainly on display at Crotasc. I highly recommend stopping here for at least lunch if not dinner, and make sure to pick up a couple of bottles of wine on your way out.

On my first visit (over 10 years ago), the seasonal menu included fresh deer steak with a cherry reduction sauce using ingredients from their own garden (they also have a nice-sized vineyard). I was hooked. I've been there twice more over the years (any time I'm near that area of Italy) and every time, the meal -- whether from the fixed menu or the seasonal one -- is wonderful. The portions are generous, the ingredients incredibly fresh and the presentation worthy of a photo.

Without going into ridiculous nouvelle or Macrobiotique , inventive cuisine based on local productsand excellent wines produced by the owners. The service is impeccable . I do not understand why they do not have a Michelin Star • It is the second visit and it was absolutely fabulous
