We stayed at this property 6 years ago and eagerly waited our return. As previously cited, the location is superb. Moorea is a gem of an island, less inhabited than Tahiti or Bora Bora, tall majestic green peaks, beautiful multi-colored blue lagoons. Of the major hotels on the island, the Hilton is ideally situated with coral gardens just off the OWBs.
As HH Diamond members, we were treated well and were given the same OWB we requested, the same one we stayed in 6 years ago. The service overall was very good and the employees gracious and hard working. Dining experiences were good, somewhat expensive but being French Polynesia this is to be expected. Recent reviews cited issues with the pool. Although not on par with newer properties for a "wow" experience, it was clean and serviced often.
The poor marks come from the overall maintenance of the property. The palapa roofs on the OWBs are in great disrepair, wood siding needs paint. The piers have not been maintained. Our villa was worn from use, with tattered materials, beat up patio door, shutters in poor condition. It did not smell clean.
Overall maintenance was very different from our stay six years ago. We inquired if there had been an ownership change and there had been, from a local man to a Chinese corporation, 2 years ago.
Perhaps the new owners are anticipating a major renovation and are milking the property for cash while in the planning stage. If so, we feel their approach of not maintaining the property is eroding the goodwill the previous owner and the Hilton name has built through the years.
We love French Polynesia and the island of Moorea. If a major renovation is not in the plans for the Hilton Moorea, we unfortunately have spent our last nights at this one-time pinnacle property. Our rating would be lower if not for the good service and excellent location.
