A lovely place to visit

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 11 Feb 2015
We stopped here on our way from Auckland to Cooks Beach, a bit of a detour but it was worth it. The gardens take about an hour to walk around at a relaxing pace, unfortunately due to the lack of rain the waterfall wasn't up to much but it was a lovely tranquil spot. Lunch was delicious and the staff/owner very welcoming.

My wife and I stayed here early January and fell in love with the tranquillity of the gardens. They are spectacular and well cared for. The most amazing highlight for us was that after 5pm the gardens were closed to the public and we had the whole place to ourselves. Stunning waterfalls, serene water Lilly pond, and glow worms to explore for in the dark! The accommodation is clean and tastefully decorated. The owners are extremely accommodating and clearly maintain and nurture the gardens with love.oh ,,and they make a fine espresso too!

The bush walk up to the water fall was an incredible nature buzz, after the gorgeous pink, cerese and white water lilies. But the very best part of all, was the stunning water fall, a special treat at the top of the 15 minute bush walk. I just wanted to stay there forever and take in the magic and spirituality of this amazing place.

And yes, there are no water lilies in Sept but they missed the real treat that made the beauty of the water lilies pale in comparison. 7 steps to heaven.

We stayed here for three nights in early November....early spring and still a bit chilly. This is a great place to decompress after travelling to New Zealand on a long haul flight. There is no TV or internet.
Sally and her son Sasha were most welcoming and provided a lovely breakfast including fresh eggs. The gardens were well kept and peaceful and you can wander around out of hours if you wish. You can even go bathing in the waterfalls if you wish.
We should have taken advantage of Sasha's offer to cook up a meal or two or should have had something in the café during the daytime.
The accommodation is clean and spacious and we would be happy to return to this little haven.

We visited in October last year and then took our elderly parents in July this year. The Coromandel Coast was a spectacular drive and once inland towards Rapaura Water Gardens the dramatic landscape and mountain road was a lovely driving adventure.
The history of the property is fascinating, the water gardens are just beautiful and our hostess charming and helpful without being obtrusive even booking tickets on the Driving Creek Railway for us. Because it was winter, the water lillies had died down for the season, but the lush green gardens did not disappoint. From here we easily drove to one of the giant Kauris, had a wonderful day trip to Driving Railway and spent a cosy night in the rustic cottage. There was ample firewood to keep any chill out of the air and adequate breakfast supplies including fresh eggs from the chooks.

Room tip: Suggest you get some supplies from Thames for meals if you don't plan on venturing out and the restaurant is closed over winter.

I was expecting to have a walk through well maintained gardens. I was disappointed. The gardens are not as maintained as expected. The place is not family friend (young children in a stroller/pram). The pond did not even have any water lilies. Don't know if were went the wrong time of year or what? The most exciting part of the gardens was seeing the chickens. Not exactly what I was expecting.
