We went for a meal at this restaurant to wish are daughter good fortune in her new employment in Gibralter,It's been many years since I was in the sheet Anchor and was pleasantly surprised at what had been done to bring this long established pub into this century, the Blockhouse restaurant decor is very up market and the idea of recycling materials to gain the desired effect has worked very well,we were met at the reception area by a young. Man who made us feel welcome and led us to our table, the menus had a good selection of starters ,meals and sweets although we were surprised at the cost of all that was offered on the menu, we ordered starters and drinks ,the drinks arrived quite quickly but we had to wait quite awhile for the starters, when they finally arrived I was disappointed at the amount of food that arrived on my slate plate. This also happened with the main meals we had to wait a long time, the restaurant was probably only one third full so it was disappointing to have to wait such a long time.I would say that the quality of the food was excellent but lacking quantity, the staff were forced into apologies for the time we had to wait, I can't fault the staff, they were very professional and keen to serve but somewhere in the process there seemed to be an unreasonable waiting time that was slowing the service.I would say that the meals are far too expensive for this type of restaurant.

My wife and I ate hear on a Saturday night. It was busy and boisterous inside with a couple of large parties but our table was ready on arrival.

Initial service was a little slow for drinks orders and we had to ask for a drinks menu. We ordered the sharing starter of ribs, prawns and potato skins, and the Butchers Block shairing main.

Our starter took over 30 minutes to arrive and we gphad to chase it. All was OK but for the sweetcorn which was stone cold. We asked for fresh hot sweetcorn and this arrived promptly.

Our Butchers Block main arrived around 15 minutes after our starters were cleared. However, yet again the sweetcorn on the meal was stone cold, we let the staff know again, but chose not to have it replaced.

Other than the sweetcorn the rest of the food was OK, but some items were only just warm enough. Reading over reviews a few mention cold food and it would seem they need to review the kitchen process to ensure all food goes out hot.

For us some of the food was overly smokey and that smoke flavour dominated everything else. We also thought the boneless chicken thighs were disappointing and the skin needed to be much crisper, it was flaccid and pretty hard to eat. Overall, our favourite parts of the starter were the potato skins and prawns. On the main we enjoyed the smoked sausage (smoke on this was subtle and not overpowering), but found little else that we really liked.

After our main the manager came to see is. We’d not complained strongly but he mentioned that our server had noted the issues and he wanted to see what we thought. We thought this was excellent customer service, and great attentive service by the server and manager. They discounted both the starter and main. This was a nice gesture and appreciated.

Our deserts were Key Lime Pie and Baked Alaska. The Key Lime Pie was excellent - the best part of the meal according to my wife. The Baked Alaska was ok, but the meringue was too soft, and so the desert was a bit too sloppy.

In summary we’re unlikely to return as the dominating flavour was the smoke they use on ribs and chicken etc. Some will like this, but for us it was just to dominant. As others have said, the Paragon Group run other restaurants in the area and these are much more to our tastes.

Service was slow to start but we were very impressed by how they reacted to issues proactively and attempted to put right. However having seen a number of reviews on here referencing cold food, they do need to review their service process.

Nachos starter is essentially a mouthful of sweetcorn, it's a no from me. Normally i can stand it but the devil's veg was inescapable.
