We had such a warm welcome, despite running late and there were cakes on the table. The cottage was a cosy, very clean home from home and the kitchen was equipped with absolutely everything we needed.
This is a one room cottage with a double bed, armchairs and a table & chairs. For a close couple such as us,it was just right (although personally a sofa would have been cosier in the evening to watch a little TV).
It was a quiet retreat, next to the reservoir and in the sticks just enough to feel switched off from the world but within easy driving distance of shops, pubs and other facilities if needed.
Plenty of footpaths and fells that can be driven to. We had planned to dip into the Lake District but decided there was enough to see where we were in the time we had. We enjoyed the walk by the river from High Force immensely and a bit of bird spotting out on the fells. There are easy walks and hard ones depending on your ability.
One day we popped down to the Wensleydale creamery for one trip out..."Cheese Gromit!"
We hope to come again earlier int he year as Howgill is a short distance from where Hannah Hauxwell had her smallholding and the land has been made into a wildlife trust meadow.
