“Excellent location and house, a couple of negatives”
Reviewed 8 February 2016 for a stay in December 2015

We stayed at Easter Duiar for a week over Christmas in 2015 in the hope of a white Christmas and as a farewell for my brother and his family before they emigrate to Australia. I had to book the trip in 2014 such is the popularity of this kind of house in this area at Christmas. Unfortunately we didn't get much snow but that is no issue as we had a lovely time.

Firstly, the good points. The house, the bothy, the location, local facilities and whisky.

- The house is wonderful. The rooms are clean and cosy, the showers and baths are modern but in keeping, the kitchen is quite modern and ideal for preparing for up to 10 people (we got a Christmas card and a bottle of wine to welcome us) and the garden is a pleasure to sit in or wander through as we did with our toddlers on a fir cone hunt. The drive is easily capable of taking four or five cars and despite the road being close to the house you simply cannot hear any traffic as the insulation is very good. The newer sitting room heats up very quickly with the log burner on which was perfect for a Christmas morning. The house is also dog friendly which was perfect as we have a Labrador puppy.

- The bothy is a lovely little annex with comfy sofa beds, excellent music and television setup, a small kitchen, ensuite and a new, albeit crammed in pool table and table football.

- The location is spectacular with views over the River Spey which you can hear as it rushes past only a couple of hundred metres from the house. The walks up on to the Hills of Cromdale which surpass 700m in altitude are a delight. When you reach the top you can clearly see the Munros of the Cairngorms among others.

- The amenities nearby are more than ample with Grantown on Spey being the best bet for most things. Otherwise a trip to Elgin or Forres isn't a bad drive given the scenery and Tesco do deliver.

- There are about 20 whisky distilleries in the surrounding area with at least five within a 10 minute drive (not all open to the public) and there are plenty of things to do in the mountains and lakes near Aviemore such as the HIghland Wildlife Park on the road back to Perth and the Reindeer Sanctuary on the road up to the Cairngorms ski centre.

Unfortunately we did have a few issues which I hope the owners will note as being easy to rectify and ones I hope future holiday makers don't have to contend with.

- This is primarily a holiday home and as such people expect to be allowed to enjoy their time there as a break from the norm, more so than ever at Christmas. On one day we were asked to allow a pest control company access to the house. We had plans away from the house and we politely said that we would be out and wouldn't be comfortable leaving the front door key for the company to use. It was an innocent request but this should have been done outside anyone staying there, less still should they have told us there are rats and mice there!

- The owners operate a system of an additional charge for electricity and log and coal usage, to be taken from the refundable damage deposit. Furthermore it is the responsibility of the tenant to make a note of the electricity readings at the point they arrive and leave. We were there for one week and in a mild period but were asked to pay an additional £139 from a £200 deposit which the owner offered to reduce to £100, even though they said they thought it was excessive after having estimated the amount.

Why the owners don't simply add an average charge to the overall rental and relieve the people staying there of this administrative burden I don't know. I hope they take this on and remove this silly exercise as it is something holidaymakers shouldn't need to do. Even damages should be dealt with like this rather than taking deposits.

- Further to the electricity charges, it took more than five weeks for my deposit to be refunded despite numerous emails and in some cases very delayed responses. They do say in the terms and conditions that the deposit will be refunded within a few weeks but I thought a fortnight would be ample especially with the immediacy of internet banking, not five weeks and only then when I pestered them. Removing the need to take the electricity readings would remove the need to take a deposit of this nature. It's just a faff which sadly shadowed our time there.

I really hope the owners take on the small points I've made as it would make for an even better experience than the one we had. Overall we had a lovely time and thank them for their hospitality. I would highly recommend this house if the deposit process was removed. That said, for the time of year the price we paid was a bargain.

“A perfect family holiday house”
Reviewed 22 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We stayed at Easter Duiar in July 2015 and can highly recommend it as a holiday house for large groups.

Our group made up two families with three children between us, aged 4 to 6. The layout of the house meant at night we could stay upstairs with our children while my brother and his family had the double bedroom and bunk bedroom downstairs. During the day the size of the house meant everyone could play and spend time together in the large kitchen or sun room or have quiet in another room away from the main group.

On our holiday we split our time between the house, its garden and exploring up the hill, which could be accessed directly from the garden, and away days to the rest of the area. Within a 30 minute drive we visited Aviemore, Landmark Adventure Park and several whisky distilleries.

We look forward to visiting this holiday house again.

“Excellent Location, Excellent House”

Stayed here as part of a walking group, the house was perfect for us. The sun room in particular is a lovely part of the house, and coupled with the living room next to the kitchen, there is plenty of room for a large group without feeling squashed. The open fires really are great to sit next to on a cold night!

As for location, the house is very close to the Cairngorms themselves, and the back garden opens out onto a gentle hillside with plenty of trails off for the day.
