Went in quite a large group - which led to problems hearing the guide at times. But sa a very good DVD of the whole process, together with historical items, the foundry and the tuning area. Well worth a visit.
Fascinating tour showing how bells are cast and made including vital ingredients like manure. Including seeing a peel of bells at the end. Close to the Great Central Railway in Loughborough
A fascinating look at engineering as it used to be before computers: making church bells and fittings in a works over a century old. There is fascinating museum too [if you like bells], including such things as a bell of a wreck buoy and the "scramble" bell from a WW II fighter base. You are encouraged to be hands on and wooden mallets are provided so you can ring these bells. The guide who took us round the works was both knowledgeable and gave us an interesting story about bell making. The works is not a museum, it is a live business making bells so it's not always tidy and you see things in the making. There is also a science to tuning big bells and some amazing old machinery to go with it.
This was a special trip for my Bell-mad son's 11th Birthday treat. The tour was really informative, and great to see the Foundry working, the cast pour was most impressive. It was lucky to see the Southwark Cathedral Bells awaiting repair, especially as we rung these for the Birthday treat last year!! The ring of 12 was another bonus, it was great that the tour allowed the ringers to have a go on some lovely sounding bells! 🔔🔔
Went on an organised tour, which cost £10 and lasted about 2 hours. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and readily answered questions. I never realised such places still exist - they cast new bells, refurb old bells and can even re-tune them. Such a wonderful place to visit and good to see that the old skills are being kept alive.
This ticks all the boxes. Its a great day out ..very interesting..I came away feeling enlightened, enthused and very proud of the work that goes on at the bell foundary..
