Review of Selborne Hotel
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 29 Aug 2024
I came here with my mum, and our experience has been wonderful. The bed was incredibly comfortable, allowing us to rest peacefully each night. As for the food, I found it to be amazing; every meal exceeded my expectations in terms of both taste and quality. Additionally, the staff were extremely helpful throughout our stay. Their professionalism and kindness made us feel welcome and well taken care of.

Overall, the experience was truly enjoyable, and I am grateful to everyone who played a part in making it so memorable. Thank you all for your exceptional service on the 29th of August, 2024.

The staff make it a pleasure to be in this hotel, they are friendly, welcoming and hard working. The receptionist was really helpful when a friend and I wanted to have a day in Glasgow, checking ferry times (the timetable wasn't operating as shown in the ferry's website) and connecting trains and printing details out for us.

The hotel itself is old and in need of redecoration but it was clean and had all I needed for the week. The stairs and floors creak like mad but that's what you have to expect with a building of this age. The gardens need attention, they could be lovely to sit out in on a sunny day but looked unkempt and unattractive. My room ( a cosy double) had a comfortable bed and was as quiet as you can expect in a hotel full of elderly people who seem to need the TV on loudly!!

The food was fine, one day the carrots were a bit overcooked and a couple of times the poached eggs a bit too well done, but considering they were catering for 3 coach loads of people I think the chefs did well. There was plenty of choice and every meal I had was hot and tasty. I sometimes eat in Michelin star restaurants, but I knew this wasn't one, adjusted my expectations accordingly and I was pleasantly surprised. All dining and bar staff were very pleasant and our server Nataliia was a delight.

Unfortunately it rained all week and it was very cold for August, but the heating was turned on which was a pleasant surprise, I've been in many hotels where management won't put heating (or air con) on except during particular months.

There are lots of tea bags, coffee, sugar and milk available to help yourself to in the bar, also body wash and shampoo available in reception. Both plus points in my opinion.

Unfortunately Dunnon itself seemed run down, with the majority of the shops that were still occupied closing at either 2pm or 4pm. Nothing really catered for tourists, which is a real shame, a few craft/souvenir shops and some cafes would be good.

The hotel is within walking distance of the foot ferry which terminates close to the railway station in Gaurock so there are plenty of other places to visit.

Note to the Manager - your staff are hard working and pleasant despite, at times, having to deal with people who don't seem to know the words please and thank you! , You should be proud of them.

Very dispirited from the moment we arrived on a Alpha Holiday. The outside of the hotel is really shabby to say the least. Lift had a rubber matting that was coming up off the floor and was rectified(!) by putting up a notice to be careful of the floor. Brilliant for Pensioners. The room was shabby and in need of updating from the 1960' and the bathroom was no bigger than a broom cupboard. Carpets in the hotel were threadbare and unclean. The other side of the hotel to walk down the promenade showed unkept gardens and rodent traps outside the dining room window. Dunoon itself is a dump with little to do and nowhere to go. The advertised ferries to other places on Alpha website, do not exist!. Food was average only enlightened by our delightful waitress from Ukraine. Entertainment was poor and only catered for the karaoke crowd. Not for me or my wife. People said it had been upgraded as a hotel. Could have fooled me and does not resemble the photos on the website

Alfa coach trip. Staff at the hotel were excellent, Nice welcome from Anna. Seaview twin room was clean and bed was comfy. Aaron behind the bar was professional and friendly. Entertainment was good especially kareoke night with Megan keeping us in check and she had a lovely voice.

Downside if you're not mobile you need to ask for ground floor room, or easy accessible room, as in our case we had 2 flights of stairs to go up, when we got out of the lift, which was fine for me but not so easy for my mam. Think they also need to look at the "chef" as although the evening menu looked good, the food that came was sadly lacking, and quite often cold. Breakfast- it's a hard job if you can't get eggs right.

Saying this I would still do a return visit, as everything else was fine and the surounding area is beautiful, the trips to Bute and Mount Stuart were well worth a visit (an added bonus as we couldn't get to Cumbrae, due to an unavoidable issue with the ferry), Driver Dave was great too, he took us out of his way to get some nice photos....... review would've been a 5⭐️ had the food lived up to expectations

Room tip: 4 for sleep and rooms due to a noisy neighbour, not the hotels fault. If you have mobility issues mention when booking

Came as part of a coach party. First visit to this part of the country.
When the coach first arrived I've got to say my first impression was disappointment. The front of the hotel looks very dated. We were greeted by a member of staff, told the basics and collected our room keys. Bags were bought quickly to our room.
The bedroom was adequate, could do with a lick of paint but was ok. Huge downside was the bathroom, it was very small, you had to leave the door open when you stood at the sink, I've seen bigger broom cupboards.
Meals were very good, all served hot and plenty of choice. The dining/entertainment room was nice. Good mix of evening entertainment and bar prices about average. All staff were very pleasant.
Dunoon itself as a destination was a bit of a disappointment, the town is very run down. Was glad that we had day trips out most days.
Lovely scenery all around.
