You ever read tourist reviews of monuments that are negative? Of course you do, there are even plenty for this one. I often think to myself, what were your expectations prior to going? It's a monument, it doesn't do anything but sit there and stand for something. If you have any more expectation than that, wow... that's all I'm gonna say.

Swords in Rock, or Sveld i fjell for those cultured enough to give it a try, is without a doubt, one of the coolest monuments I've ever visited. And that's from someone who visited on an extremely windy, drizzly, crappy day!

To get the most out of it, sure, you'd wish for a bright day, calm waters and blue skies, but let's be real, we can't all visit at times like that. For what this place is, it's wonderful. I even walked an hour from Stavanger Sentrum to visit it and an hour back and was completely satisfied.

I would not recommend you make a trip to Stavanger just for this, it's not worth it. But if you're in Stavanger already, there's no reason not to stop here as it's a nice quick thing to see and get some decent snaps. Definitely take advantage of vantage points on the other side of the beach, or behind the swords as you can get some creative viewpoints.

Do your research folks, the monument does mean something, and no, it's not old. *facepalm* For all these reviewers who thought these things were ancient and left bad reviews because they weren't. There is some small signage at the monument.

Just a very cool, very viking thing to see and experience. Oh, and I read on here someone thought there were not an impressive size... what other mammoth swords in the ground are you comparing them too? 33ft swords is pretty impressive in my book.

We had the pleasure of being shown this exhibit on our way from Stavanger to Sola, well worth a viewing. Stirring.
Pity about the weather when we were there, wind and rain beyond belief, but well worth battering by the wind

The Swords in the Rock are huge and worth seeing. The beach area was packed and skiers on the water pleasant place to visit if you want a picnic and a break on the grass area. Photos are a must are they are huge and very impressive

I visited this place in Autumn so the beach was not crowded. The wind in your hair and the crashing waves gave a sense of serene calmness. I had hiked from Ullandhaug tårnet & botanical gardens. Although it is possible to take the bus directly here also.
