Museum of Reconstruction for Finnmark and Northern Troms
Ranked #4 of 12 things to do in Hammerfest

The entrance to this museum was light and airy with a spacious café and an old-style gift shop. The museum itself was well set out and very interesting, helped by the addition of all information in both English and German as well as Norwegian. There was a small area showing, on demand, original footage from the war years. Lighting came on automatically in the various ‘furnished rooms’ when you stepped in through the doorway. Well worth a visit.

Nice, historically educative exhibition. In a relatively short time you can gain basic knowledge about history of Hammerfest.

Good film and exhibits about the devastation during WW11 and the subsequent hardship during the lengthy reconstruction. The prefab houses were remarkably similar to those in the UK which can be seen at the Avoncroft museum in Bromsgrove.

The Museum of Reconstruction for Finnmark and North Troms - the museum commemorates the war and the scorched-earth policy of Hammerfest by the retreating Nazis during WW2 and it's reconstruction. During the war 50,000 people from the North were forced to evacuate to the south, while 25,000 hid in caves or found refuge elsewhere - relying on the allies (especially the Russians) to come rescue them.

As my mother grew up in Northern Troms and was only 9 years old when the Germans chased her family off their farm and burnt it down, this was a heart-wrenching journey through her childhood. Simple but "real" exhibits, informative text and a good movie helped make this a memorable experience about the North Norwegians who were refugees in their own country less than 75 years ago. Don't miss the "tower", where you get a good view of Hammerfest.
