Mairenui Villa

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 29 Mar 2016
We stayed at Mairenui Villa for 3 nights to get away and have a "nothing to do at all" break. The Villa was just the break we needed. It was beautiful and idyllic. Sue greeted us on arrival and walked us through the restored Villa. My husband and I had a lovely few days sitting on the verandah gazing across the farms and hills, listening to the birds and the sheep and the horses. Well recommended get away. Thanks Sue and David you will see us again

We stayed at Mairenui for a night, and we remember it fondly.

We were a couple, so we stayed in the suite attached to the main homestead where David & Sue live. The place is a huge farm, with horses, sheep, dogs, and gardens that they've maintained for decades, with care that reflects in the beautiful landscape.

We were treated with such warmth and hospitality, in such a beautiful place, with such friendly hosts, that we treasure the stay. Thanks David & Sue!

Our third visit in 10 years and made to feel like old friends! Relaxed and informal, yet the food has to be the best in the north island, with lively company and conversation. With their natural hospitality, we will have to try one of David and Sue's French adventures one day.

Not to imply we weren't planning to enjoy ourselves, but this was our first visit to Mairenui and we were unprepared for how idyllic and well-appointed our two night stay in the Villa would be. Arriving in almost total dark just before 6 on Friday evening, we found the lights on and wood stove blazing.

Comfortable beds, well-equipped kitchen (on Saturday we actually baked a loaf of bread), pool table, two open fireplaces, beautiful veranda covering two sides of the house... The landscape, of course, is beautiful, and though we didn't catch sight of any deer roaming by we were kept company at night by the calls of a close-by morepork. David and Sue were warm and welcoming hosts, and - I know it sounds like a cliché! - my only regret about the trip was that work beckoned and we couldn't stay another night.

Fantastic value, beautiful isolated setting, comfy and rustic accommodation with just enough mod-cons to let you feel at ease without losing the traditional feel. Highly recommended (even - especially? - in colder weather. Perfect excuse to get both open fires and the wood stove going!) and we'll definitely be returning later in the year.

I and two friends recently visited, it was my third visit and their first. I had tried to describe the lovely feeling of being at one with nature at this lovely tranquil spot. They are now aware of the special qualities of this place. We stayed each time in the Villa, a rustic, unpretentious time capsule. A glitzy five star stay, this is not. But if you are looking to repair your ragged sensibilities and appreciate the importance of quiet time to reflect, this is definitely the place. The evening dinner is very special with Sue serving up real food excellently prepared. The company is was interesting too. If I return which I probably will to NZ I wouldn't dream of passing it by.
Thank you David and Sue, another lovely experience.

Room tip: Three choices of accommodation. I like the Villa

We stayed just one night at the villa with our two young children aged 2 and 5. We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay here - the house is beautiful, interesting and it is lovely and different to stay somewhere so historic. It was amply stocked with linen and towels and the kitchen had everything you could need. There was even a box of toys for the kids, novels and magazines. But it was the outdoors we enjoyed the most - stunning views, a sprawling garden with an old slide and cubby house which kept the kids entertained for hours. And we went for a walk up the road to discover breathtaking views for miles. Kids adored the animals they met - horses, sheep and dogs. Sue and David were lovely, welcoming hosts who showed us the animals and treated us to a most gorgeous brekkie - homemade muesli, fresh berries from the garden, Greek yoghurt, warm croissants with homemade jam and strong coffee - better than any of the five star hotels we'd had breakfast at! Highly recommended for a relaxing stay that is homely, refreshing and fun,
