My husband and I did a self-guided tour of the Royal Palace on a Monday morning at the end of August. It was a slow morning and we had no problems with crowds.
Our biggest mistake was our decision to skip the guided tour. We arrived about ten minutes late for the start of the first guided tour in English and decided that we could just tour on our own. This definitely made our trip less enjoyable, as there is very little signage throughout the museum to explain the rooms. We often had no clue regarding the significance of the room or artifacts.
Take the tour!
Other than that, we went through the Palace in about an hour. Some of the rooms are stunning and beautiful. Ornate and opulent. Some of the rooms are just odd. One was done in 1960's futuristic that made me think of Don Draper's swanky apartment on Mad Men. The other was a very, very dark sitting room with a chandelier that had cherubs on it. It was creepy and a bit like Disney's Haunted Mansion. It was just missing Madame Leota's Crystal Ball! Those two rooms made the biggest impression.
The Palace itself is an enormous building, but the touring areas are relatively small. It's easy to combine a tour of the Palace with other Stockholm tourist spots. I think that it's a must-see, although on future trips to Stockholm, we would likely not do it again. Once was plenty.
