My husband and I did a self-guided tour of the Royal Palace on a Monday morning at the end of August. It was a slow morning and we had no problems with crowds.

Our biggest mistake was our decision to skip the guided tour. We arrived about ten minutes late for the start of the first guided tour in English and decided that we could just tour on our own. This definitely made our trip less enjoyable, as there is very little signage throughout the museum to explain the rooms. We often had no clue regarding the significance of the room or artifacts.

Take the tour!

Other than that, we went through the Palace in about an hour. Some of the rooms are stunning and beautiful. Ornate and opulent. Some of the rooms are just odd. One was done in 1960's futuristic that made me think of Don Draper's swanky apartment on Mad Men. The other was a very, very dark sitting room with a chandelier that had cherubs on it. It was creepy and a bit like Disney's Haunted Mansion. It was just missing Madame Leota's Crystal Ball! Those two rooms made the biggest impression.

The Palace itself is an enormous building, but the touring areas are relatively small. It's easy to combine a tour of the Palace with other Stockholm tourist spots. I think that it's a must-see, although on future trips to Stockholm, we would likely not do it again. Once was plenty.

It was very nice location from the center of Stockholm. Especially from Central station, it takes 15 minutes walk. A Swedish royal guardian takes the ceremony of guard change often. It may be every one hour. Female soldier is also good royal guardian.

It's a big big palace.Not very beautiful.
Inside you can visit only a very litle part. The Royal apartments are nice but nothing special when comparing with other royal palaces in europe.
The changing of the guard was a desilution. It tooks place in a square surrounding by ugly buses from the tours agencies. No glamour at all.
You can buy a ticket that gives you entry to more 3 museums in the palace, none of them very impressive.

Stockholm's Royal Castle is one of the world's biggest. Not so pretty to look at from the outside, but wait till you've bought your ticket at the entrance.
You can look back to the time when Sweden was a mighty country. The representation rooms were all magnificent. Go down in the cellar and see the thick brick walls (5,5 meters). There are also separate museums with entrances from the outside, all on the same ticket.
You need time to get through it all.

Skip it and save yourself time and money on any of the parks or a good dinner. Nothing special, expensive and boring. Drottningholm is better.
