I spent two days in that restaurant for dinner and it was absolutely amazing! The meal, the service and the place itself was so great! A 100% recommended!

Really good cretan experience.
Food: decent size plates really well cooked
Service: really helpful polite and everything was on time
Location: central located in picturesque ladadika.
Price: logic pricing value for money
Charoupi continues in a very good level the legacy of mirsini restaurant
Siglino plate needed a bit more aging too fresh

Greek food is just about moussaka, calamari and souvlaki, right? Wrong.

Earlier this year I wrote about discovering how one restaurant on Ithaca was raising the bar and on a trip to Thessaloniki, I found this little gem of a restaurant specialising in Cretan food.

We had not booked but the incredibly friendly staff found us a table and we were first served with raki and simple rusks, olives and tomatoes.

One of our starters was snails. Forget the French version which is usually loaded up with enough garlic to keep a legion of vampires away for a month, These little beauties were delicately flavoured with rosemary and the lightest touch of garlic. France, take note. The second was what most people would think of as dolmades, but again, the subtle flavouring took these to new heights.

For my main course, I had the fried rabbit with droplets of intense gels such as beetroot which brought a variety of flavour notes like no other I have yet tasted. My wife chose the meatballs which were stuffed with Graviera cheese with a side dish of a flat pastry which was described as a pie with tomatoes and yoghurt.

Throughout the meal, the staff were attentive but not obtrusive and were happy to chat and talk about the dishes and their flavourings.

An excellent meal and it is well worth weaving your way around the back streets of Ladadika to find it.

our second visit to this restaurant. we visited on a rainy day and though we didnt expect to find a table ( as it is a small place ) we did. i rarely give such a rating to anything really but if this restaurant doesnt deserve it, i dont know what does. the food: tasty, relatively light, clean, abundant ( we had apaki with sausage, meatballs ..). perfectly cooked. the service, however, is the main reason i will visit it again. EVERYONE working here seems to enjoy it. they are friendly, smiling, willing to assist. their treatment towards us made us feel at home. a big THANK YOU to all of them!

Our hotel receptionist told us about this place and even though it is in Ladadika we wouldn't have found it without being directed there as it isn't on any of the usual Ladadika walking routes. I'm glad we were told where is was though (virtually opposite the Astoria Hotel is a good guide) as apart from a couple of niggles it was a superb choice.

Having visited Crete many times (June 2018 was the last) I wish all Cretan menus and food could match what we found there. Xaroupi means Carob and the carob seemed to figure highly in their thoughts and menu preparation, even down to them using Carob flour for their bread rolls which were excellent. The Carob also featured (syrup) in the complimentary dessert we were given which was only let down by the Walls type ice cream that accompanied it. To whet out gastric juices a small mixed plate of baby tomato, tiny olives and somthing else I can't currently recall was accompanied by a glass of the finest and best raki we have ever tasted.

Those readers who have previously been assaulted in Crete by a free raki at the end of their meal need not worry as this stuff was the real McCoy and restored our faith in the Cretan spirit.

We weren't in the mood to eat much so started with the fava with caramelized onions which sounds so unassuming but when tasted it really does blow your ming with unexpected flvour and complexity. The rabbit I had next was however a disappointment in taste and due to it being very poncy (blobs of this and that dotted all over the plate). My wife had the chicken with the pasta (it was leg as the breast fillet had finished) which was quite acceptable.

All in all this newish restaurant deserves to do well as a great deal of thought has gone into the menu and the service is good with friendly and attentive staff.

Suggestion. Install some less blatent lighting. The bright lighting currently in place might let you see everything that is on the plates but it does make it look a bit like a canteen.
