“Nice”
Review of Gialos Beach

Reviewed 28 January 2018

On a sunny day we spent most of our morning at Gialos beach, the sand is white and soft, we chose to stay in a section where most of the locals are settled and had a wonderful morning

I'll start by saying I'm not much pf a beach person, so bear that in mind. However, I have been to and loved Elafonisi beach in Crete, and the Maldives etc. Gialos was a bit of a trek down a very twisty road. That's OK. But the beach was stony, and featureless, and backed by muddy and stony cliffs. There was a nice beach bar for coffee, but the beach itself was a disappointment, and there are better on Lefkada (although all the beaches we saw were stony).

Having read other reviews here, I felt the hair raising car journey down steep, potholed roads with seriously tight hairpin bends would be worth it. Sadly, it wasn't.

This is a beach that is better seen from above and, from that point of view, it's definitely worthy capturing through a camera lens.

However, the beach itself is shingle, not sandy as I was led to believe, and once in the water, the pebbles are huge and not easy to negotiate. Because of this, the waves are huge. Great for surfers and bodyboarders, not so for non swimmers and families.

There's a lot of discarded rubbish around and the only refreshment offerings are from 3 parked up food trucks who have created semi permanent covered seating areas. These are cash only as you'd probably expect. There are no toilets, so if you're caught short, you'll need to park your modesty.

All in all, I felt it wasn't worth the stressful drive.

Visit rating 4/10

Our intention had been Port Katsiki beach but as we ate lunch overlooking the road down to it, watching loads of car, must of whom turned back and returned back up the congested windy road we decided to give it a miss. Instead we found Gialos Beach, back up the coast. Bit of a gamble as you have no idea what to expect. Road is steep in places, quite potholed, very windy and long but what you get, even in the middle of August in the afternoon, is a lovely quiet beach. Plenty of empty loungers if you want but plenty of empty beach space (as well as car parking - parked literally a few metres from where we sat - and we DO NOT like sitting right next to other people!). Water is gorgeous & clear although sea shoes a very good idea as entering and exiting the sea is over a few rocks and don't forget you're on the windier side of the island so there are waves to contend with! Do go in though, it's so worth it. Don't expect sand but otherwise so much better than the alternative busy beaches.

Gialos is one of my favoirite beaches in Lefkada. Altough the way to the beach in a bit hardcore, with bumpy and sloppy roads, the sightseeing is breathtaking. The beach is less crowded but it has umbrellas and seats you can rent if you arive early enough.

Also there are a couple if canteen bars with good coffe and snacks.

The only not so good thing is the water enterance. It is rocky and a little harsh for my taste.

But that aside, a great beach alltogether.
