This is a beautiful little church nestling beside the main cathedral and easily missed if you are not looking around carefully. Do not miss! Lovely architecture work both internal and external.

Oh so quaint and yes little stone church in the shadow of large cathedral in Mitropolis square....single dome.
What it lacks in size it gains in beauty...built in 12c over a much older church. Building materials were scavenged from other ancient sites around Athens which add to its uniqueness. Stone reliefs tell their own history.....Byzantine and some perhaps Armenian as this ethnic group were often used in bygone times for their refined artistic qualities. Iconography inside the chapel provide the spiritual comfort to all that come inside to light candle and offer prayers and perhaps some spare coins which probably go towards the upkeep of church.
Some greenery and trees around church ....softens the area from the scaffolding that surrounds the main cathedral
Worth a visit before venturing around the Plaka area and other sites. Free to enter and open all day and into evening.
Sign says..... church of Panagia Gorgoepikoos and Ayios Eleftherios

You will never tire of the beauty and majesty of the beautiful Greek Orthodox Byzantine style of the the churches, the icons and architecture. Large or small they envelope you in peace and tranquility that you can only experience in Greek Churches. Outstanding!

This is a beautiful little Orthodox Church we called in for evening prayer a real treat to be praying in a building where there has been prayers for hundreds of years.

This tiny church dates back to the 12th century.
Its size is greatly reduced but the enormous cathedral nearby (which is currently being renovated).
While there's not much to see inside the tiny church, it sure provides some lovely photo-ops.

Thank TheShis
