I will leave aside the 'birthplace of civilization' historical truths because if you don't know that, you don't know what you are looking at. I'll just tell you the place, since I visited it a few days ago. Easy to walk, the museum is just opposite and gives stunning views of the Acropolis, there is free water outside the tourist information before the entrance to the Parthenon, Parthenon gives great views of the city and walking around these antiquities, finding the exact spot where Athenians would vote etc does feel majestic...

Greeces most famous attraction needs you to read up first to get most from it. Or search other peoples photos and videos online. It is a great site but very crowded and there are queue for tickets. V hot in the afternoon and check the closing times. Closes on national holidays like May day.

Even with out 4 and 6 year olds the climb was manageable. Get a ticket for all the big things to see at one of the other ancient places (the old library for example) so you won’t have to wait in line for the ticket offices.
Gorgeous history and views.

The place opens at 8am, but I’d suggest getting in line a good 15-20 min earlier. We entered in via the southeast corner near the theater of Dionysus. One person at the ticket counter just...wasnt cutting it. The other entrance was at the west side, closer to the Odeon of Herodus. That entrance appears to be the one for people with disabilities whereas the southwest entrance was best for non-disabled as you’d have to hoof it in a good zigzag past plenty of marble columns and ruins.

The Acropolis is crawling with people quite early, smart as you’ll avoid the midday heat. There really is no shade, so come prepared. A water fountain near the WC’s was a godsend, so at least you have that.

I think an hour to see the entire sight makes sense. It’s epic in that the place is still standing after so many centuries, and historically is...one could argue, where democracy was invented. Aside from that, and a great view of a hazy city, that’s it. Oh, plenty of slick marble on the ground makes footing problematic for some. Wear sturdy shoes.
