Wyndham Grand Hotel in Athens was sold to me as a 5-Star when it should be 1-Star

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 25 Jun 2024
I recently stayed at, Wyndham Grand Hotel in Athens, from June 2, 2024, to June 6, 2024, and was extremely disappointed with my experience. Not only was I unable to sleep for the entire duration of my stay, but I also found the sanitary conditions of the bathroom and towels to be unacceptable.

As a 5-star hotel, I was shocked to find no provisions for foreign travelers, such as USB ports and international plugs. This lack of basic amenities was very inconvenient. When asked for plugs to use, I was told to go outside and buy what I needed (NO JOKE).

My stay in Athens, which I had planned months in advance, was completely ruined by these issues and the unhelpful attitude of your staff. I had high expectations given the reputation of the Wyndham hotel chain, having had positive experiences at Wyndham hotels in many countries.

I have communicated my dissatisfaction to several travel agencies, and they are prepared to publish my blog post detailing my recent experience, including photos and videos. However, I would prefer to resolve this matter amicably and avoid a social media campaign against your hotel. Therefore, I am requesting a full refund for my stay.

I have documented my issues with pictures and videos, which can be used as evidence if necessary.

Based on my experience, I would rate my stay at Wyndham Grand Athens as ONE STAR (for the roof over my head).

If you decide to stay at this hotel, I highly recommend requesting to view the room before paying. I tried to do this but was told it was against hotel regulations, which should have been a red flag.

We just had a single night stay here with a group tour.
Our room was large and very well-equipped, and the air-conditioning was excellent (quiet and very efficient).
The room and bathroom were superficially clean enough, but a bit dusty/sticky in less conspicuous places (noticed when I was looking for something I’d dropped!) There were also a few minor maintenance issues – For example, the soap dispenser brackets on the wall had clearly come away, so it was just standing on the counter, and the curtain had come off a few of the hooks so didn’t close completely. The view from the window was of a run-down small block of flats directly opposite.
The only restaurant/bar in the hotel is on the top floor. Both the hotel’s website and a sign in the lift suggest that there is also a restaurant called Fos on the ground floor, but this apparently does not actually exist – and a male receptionist was quite rude and dismissive when I asked about this.
The views of the Acropolis and city from the top floor of the hotel are fabulous – There is even a telescope (which functioned very well) on the terrace to enable an even better view!
We had a drink in the restaurant/bar after arriving, but despite the lovely views, we decided not to have dinner here as it seemed a little too warm inside and there was some loud music.
Breakfast was good, with a wide selection of choices as you would expect in a hotel of this class. (However, there was no food to order, such as omelettes.) The manager who greeted/seated us at breakfast was friendly and efficient. Despite the restaurant seeming quite small for the size of the hotel (and it was very busy), there was no queue and all the food items were constantly replenished.
I have noticed some other reviews have commented on the area in which the hotel is located. However, despite this – and my own comment about the view from our window at the back of the hotel – I would not say the area felt unsafe. We took an evening walk out of the hotel for dinner, and noticed that there seem to be a number of other hotels and restaurants in the area – indeed, two or three other hotels are visible almost from the front door. We were recommended an excellent restaurant which is almost next-door to the hotel.
For interest, the ‘Fallen Aviators Monument’ is on the roundabout just in front of the hotel!

The rooms were dirty. The coffee machine was not working. They did not clean the room all day long. The front desk was rude. There is no concierge for help. The pool area was tiny for such a big hotel. The breakfast area was small for so many reservations.

The Wyndham Grand Athens is a solid hotel located centrally in Athens very convenient to the Acropolis and lots of good food and shopping. Its clean and has a great am breakfast spread on its rooftop level. While their pool may be a bit chilly for ny liking nothing beats their amazing day and night views of the acropolis. Breathtaking

The pool bar has a good vibe and a decent menu. The pool itself is very small.
Staff were busy but mostly still attentive after all it was a Saturday night.
Cocktails were great and quick to arrive. Music was from the 70’s and 80’s
Gets busy around 8 pm.

Apparently a 5 star hotel, but in my opinion, more 3 stars, out dated, needing renovation & repairs. For example, upon arrival, we found our toilet shoots water out of bowl every-time you flush, needing repair, and weighing machine doesn’t work. Caters to large groups, especially Americans. House-keeping atrocious, beware! You need to constantly call front desk for things like toilet paper, towels, kleenex tissue, replenish coffee/sugar/milk (which the front desk staff state they charge), however this rule seems to fluctuate, depending upon housekeeper & seems random, with no signage to indicate this policy. Front desk uncaring, unconcerned and overwhelmed, similarly with the servers on the 9th floor at breakfast- over worked, understaffed & really don’t care. We witnessed another guest having an issue at checkin and were surprised by how nasty & defensive the front desk attendant was. Few bright spots- Niki at the travel desk is outstanding to help guide you around the city and find great restaurants and plan your day. The breakfast manager is also amazing, always smiling & looking to help you find a table during peak times. Breakfast is reasonable with multiple choices, but not of the standard of a 5 star hotel, as stated. Location of the hotel is questionable with noticeable ghettos between the hotel and tourist areas. Best to use taxi at night. The metro station is next door, as is the hop on- off bus company stop. Walking to the main tourist areas are 15-20 min, but through run down areas. Another highlight is the 9th floor terrace top with great views of the city and Acropolis. Would I stay here again??- doubt it, until they improve their operations & housekeeping standards.

Room tip: Don’t be fooled by the beautiful pictures, it’s not a 5 star.
