Fine for business but not a holiday

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Oct 2023via mobile
We were on a business trip, the hotel was near where we needed to be for work. We were working long hours and the rooftop bar and restaurant at the end of the day was really really great. However, the area around the hotel was absolutely awful and I would not recommend it for a recreational visit. Our clients ( Athens locals) begged us not to go outside the hotel unless we were getting in a taxi. The rooms were spacious but varying in quality but I did feel really safe and comfortable in the hotel. Fine for business but nit for a holiday

Dear Guest,

Thank you for staying at Wyndham Grand Athens and for taking the time to rate your experience with us. Regarding the location, Metaxourgeio is one of the oldest neighborhoods of Athens that during the last years has been reconstructed and evolved into one of the most developing districts of Athens with excellent bars, awarded restaurants and several theaters such as the National Theatre. Wyndham Grand Athens is very lucky to have a property in the heart of Athens and a very strategic location just a few steps from “Metaxourgeio” metro station that brings our guests very close to must-see attractions. We hope that despite the inconveniences we can welcome you back again in the future to ensure a much more satisfactory stay.

Kind Regards,
Maria Tzahani

This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. From the moment we arrived there were 2 bellman/doorman standing around. They didn’t even acknowledge us and had to carry our bags ourselves. When we got to our room, well, the pictures speak for themselves. Forget the terrible neighborhood. The hotel itself is a disaster. Just plain nasty. We booked for 1 night so we could sleep before our flight out at 6 am. Stayed here 9 hours. Never again for this hotel or ANY Wyndham property. 5 stars? Not even 1!!! $300 a night???? Save yourself the aggravation and health hazard. We would have booked somewhere else but with the terrible neighborhood and it being almost 10pm, we decided to rough it for one night. Shame on you Zeus management and Wyndham for lending your name to this poor excuse of a hotel.

Room tip: STAY AWAY!!!

Avoid avoid avoid. Especially if you’re coeliac or gluten intolerant. Hotel is really rough, unsafe area too

Do not stay here. Wyndham grand (WG) is Sold as a 4* but a 2* at best in one of the worst, unsafe, areas of Athens!!

After reading some really mixed reviews we decided to give the hotel the benefit of the doubt and book for 3 nights

Arrived after a long journey to be told there were plumbing issues with our room and we were being moved to a hotel by the seaside that was 25 minutes away. We were meeting family in central Athens so declined this. Ended up, after a lot of ‘debate’ in the Hyatt Athens (lovely hotel, see separate review!) after more discussion the WG agreed to pay for our taxi costs too and from the Hyatt.

Arrived back at the Wyndham Grand the following day (after us doing loads of chasing as they didn’t keep us informed of anything) and finally got to our room on 6th floor.

Room was basic, a real lack of attention to detail - toilet roll holder dirty and really unlevel, no tea bags or coffee and empty boxes for vanity kits.

Went down to the ground floor for breakfast the next day (ground floor restaurant was advertised in the in-room information) but the was nothing there apart from empty plates and paper cups so we asked at reception and we’re abruptly told ‘floor 9’

Arrive at the 9th, entered restaurant and gave our room number before being told ‘you have continental breakfast, do not eat hot food’. I’m coeliac and need a gluten free diet, despite contacting the hotel beforehand the food offering for gluten free was awful. I was given 3 slices of soggy GF bread that was obviously defrosted and nothing else. There was nothing else there that was GF

Got back to our room later that night to find our room key missing, toilet rolls not replenished. Cushions and bed runner from our bed had been taken from the room and they hadn’t given us any shower gels, shampoo etc. asked twice but got nothing.

Staff were not overly friendly and it’s in one of the roughest most dangerous areas of Athens - avoid avoid avoid

And we’re still waiting for the room cost to be credited back to our hotel for the Hyatt costs. GW told us they’d cover all our costs but we had a pre authorization taken from our account that we’re still waiting to be added back to our account (Hyatt wouldn’t give us a room without a swipe of a card)

Even the taxi drivers told us to not walk in this area after dark and it’s the highest crime area especially known for pickpockets

If you’re coeliac stay at the Hyatt. They’re really switched on about allergens and had a dedicated GF area at breakfast

Other reviews mentioned issues with staff. Everyone so far has been very nice. Eleni at the breakfast buffet is so sweet and goes above and beyond! There is onsite valet parking I rented a car. It is secure below ground behind solid doors. You do have to walk outside and around corner to the valet parking but easy. Restaurant across from front doors is excellent and inexpensive Mironi’s. Someone had a birthday and they turned out all lights to bring dessert and then had a group dance with her in middle of restaurant and threw plates on floor when done which was festive. No microwave in room. Has a safe and mini fridge. Coffee pods but only first two free. No ice makers have to go to top floor bar for ice. Room ok bed comfy. All staff speak English. Not five star in US. Neighborhood is a little sketchy so wouldn’t walk alone at night. City view I’m looking at old apartments with balconies covered with junk but that’s ok. Just wouldn’t pay more for view. View from bar/breakfast area is stunning of acropolis. The metro ( subway) is a close walk and goes everywhere in city. It is very fast but no ac so hot. Takes you fast to Acropolis. Bus stop for on off tour buses also across street. Staying here for meeting. Will be here a bit longer so will update if needed.

Room tip: Valet parking behind solid doors available. No microwave. Mini fridge.

Check in was the first glitch with an attempt to move me to another hotel due to maintenance issues and telling me my travel agent made a mistake with the prepaid twin room booking. I refused to move and presented my voucher which had no errors and clearly said twin room. 30 minutes later I got my “ twin city view” room on the second floor with a tenement apartment view. ( approx $400 Canadian per night)
We selected this hotel for the pool BUTit was only open from 12 am to 7 pm. Not very useful for morning swims or going after a tour day. Pretty much a waste
The bathroom needed some deep cleaning likely due to the humidity but we never saw the same rust and mildew in other bathrooms.
Breakfast and coffee were very good but the staff were disinterested and rarely smiled unlike most places you go here.
The room was adequate.

Room tip: Don’t select for the pool it is only open 11-7 Get a high up room for a view
