...but wait, it can get better….Tamarind Hills is still under development. Once the resort is complete it can only get better, with access to shops, bars and restaurants.
However, as it stands this remains the best accommodation we have ever stayed at ...on one of the best islands around.
Tamarind Hills is on the west coast of the island, about a 30 minute drive from the airport and just a 5 minute drive to the nearby Jolly Harbour.
The accommodation is spectacular with everything you need. Spread over 3 air-conditioned floors, its fantastic holiday luxury. The ground floor features an open plan lounge and kitchen area, with plenty of room to lounge and relax - the kids loved this and made good use of the Wi-Fi that each property has. There is a well-stocked kitchen, with a food size fridge / freezer and a useful dish washer. To the rear, there is also a utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer. There is a very good gas bbq outside that we took advantage of a number of times (with some good meat and fish at local shops)
To the first floor are 2 big double rooms - both with ensuite - the kids were in heaven and at first sight I did wonder whether we should take one of these rooms. However, wandering up to the top floor we were taken aback by a dream of a bedroom. Covering the whole of the top floor is a room with a bath (plus separate ensuite shower room), his and hers sinks and a huge bed - waking up in the morning the first sight is a spectacular view across the Caribbean Sea - fantastic.
Outside, there is plenty of lounging space ..and a nice little dipping infinity pool. Its not huge but was big enough for the kids to mess around in every day. As if not spoiled enough by that, they then had to put up with a whole 20 second walk across velvety soft sand into a small private beach. Beach was big enough to kick a ball, or throw a Frisbee …and had a few areas to snorkel and see fish
Cleaners came in often and place was kept very clean. Onsite supervisor Nino was very welcoming and helpful and the Property Manager, Juan was always on hand to provide advice ..as well as providing some good discounted activities
Darkwood beach to the south was an easy walk - with a good beach bar about 10 minutes away. Ffryes beach to the north was a 2 minute drive North but this will be an easy walk once the board walk is complete. As for the beaches themselves, well the sand and sea doesn’t get any better !
Whilst my prime objective of a holiday is relaxation, I must admit that I had some reservations about how we would keep ourselves occupied on this holiday - there are no shops in walking distance ..and not really any bars / restaurants local enough for a short walk. we took a 12 year old girl and a 15 year old boy ..what were they going to do !?
We needn't have worried. Driving was not an issue, the roads are fairly quiet ..and its normally a straight road to where you need to get to.
We got pretty much all we needed from the store at Jolly Harbour - food selection was good and not bad value for money. Another 10 minute drive takes you into St John's where there is more shopping to be found and weekend markets.
Eating places are aplenty within a 5 minute drive - we never had a bad meal - from the simple but excellent food at nearby Dennis' Beach bar (Ffryes Beach) through to the more elegant Sheer Rocks and the sublime Jacqui O's beach bar (a must for a special lunch occasion). Jolly Harbour has a few decent eateries - and most had free Wi-Fi to keep the kids quiet.
We did also drive round the island – it was really straight forward and managed to easily find everything we wanted to. A drive to the south took us through the rain forest …where we found the zip wire …that was was great fun. Once through the Forest, we could head to the east of the Island where we swam with the sting rays (that is a must for everybody’s bucket list ..simply amazing experience). Half moon bay was worth the drive, where there is a mixture of good waves to have fun in, or walk around the bay to tranquil beach and sea…and of course see the remains of the Half Moon Bay Hotel (once ranked one of the worlds best) …now destroyed by a Hurricane.
Our property manager also recommended the round the island catamaran – this was a great day out. Plenty of free rum and great perspective on the island. Tamarind Hills looked great from the sea!
Overall, fantastic holiday …will be back in a flash (when I’ve saved up again).
