“A wonderful experience”
Reviewed 18 May 2009

After visiting Lisbon we decided never to go back to Portugal.
We then decided to make another attempt and try Porto.
Just as well. What a difference! Not many monuments to visit but one could wonder around for days without ever getting bored. Not to mention the fabulous eating and drinking places at very reasonable prices, the local wines and, of course, the Port wine. The local people are extremely friendly and willing to help.
The Citysightseeing Tour is highly recommended: its two routes give you a full taste of the town as they take you around the old town but also through the new town as well as along the Ocean. Excellent value for money. A three days visit is the minimum recommended.

Porto, Braga and Barcelos.
Date: June 2008
Reviewer: A TripAdvisor Member, Pontypool, South Wales.
This was a family trip, i.e. parents, daughter and son in law and it was the best overseas trip yet. In Porto the highlights were the Ribeiro, wine caves, Quality Inn Hotel, shopping, and the local population whom we found friendly, helpful and patient with me as I practised my Portuguese. Best of all was the full day boat trip up the Douro to Pinhao, this is a must for all visitors to Porto. A visit by bus to Braga with its fountains and to see 'Bom Jesus' cathedral, take the funicula if you want to save yourself a lot of walking as there is plenty of that once at the top. In Braga I had the best Francesinha ever, you visit Braga then you must have one of these. The last place visited was Barcelos by rail, this again is well worth a visit, the best outdoor market I have ever been to, absolutely enormous, oh yes and of course its the home of the famous cockeral, buy your gifts here.

“Porto - interesting place for one day visit”
Reviewed 25 October 2008

Porto is an interesting place to see. Is a quiet old city with nice arhitecture. On the river shores are few terraces with a lovely view over the other shore where are a lot of Porto wine shops. On some of them you can see how the wine is kept and processed and also you cat taste it. Some of them provide free transport from the bridge to their place. Also you can buy wine, allthough you can buy same wine from Lisbon's airport at almost same price (the difference is about few eurocents).
You can see images attached.

“Let's be fair - Porto is a dump!”
Reviewed 7 September 2008

Porto claims to be a working city and, if it is, this may explain why so much of it seems to demand renovation - because the residents have no time off work.

The whole place in August 2008 seemed to close down about 10pm at the latest, many of the buildings are dilapidated, the "nice" areas are, er, zero in number, and it's such a shame because with it's history, (crumbling) architecure and position in the river it should be top-notch as a place to visit.

That said, the area of Matosinhos, at the end of one of the metro lines, is a great place to visit for either a convenient beach or especially for fish-lovers in the summer when restaurant after restaurant serves the very best fish from charcoal BBQ's off the street, long into the night.

Most importantly though, Porto is a great base from which to visit lovely towns (by punctual, clean, cheap train - that's a good idea isn't it?) such as Braga, Guimares and Viana dos Costelos.

Lastly, and no disrepect to the staff at all, who are excellent, but the Vila Gale hotel is in the very worst position for the biggest hotel in a city to be.

“A city for a weekend”
Reviewed 30 April 2008

Porto is a city ideal for a weekend. It's better to visit it in Spring or Summer

Tips:
* Use shoes for walking. It's a city where you should walk accross the streets up and down.
* There is a 24h or 3 days public transport ticket. It's wise to use it if you don't wish to become exhaust
* There are some old tram that are nice to see.
* It's usual that people eat some cake at afternoon in some of the "confeiterias".
* The meal is one dish, but the restaurant usually put something in the table when you sit. Obviously, you will pay for this kind of started.
* Grilled fish is very cheap, but if it's cooked in a more depurated way then the price increase.
* The espetata is very good and also octopussy.
* In the Gaia port there people that offers you packs for ship travel+bus travel+oporto cave visit or ship travel+oporto cave visit. I have not liked the ship visit, but it's very personal, other people has enjoyed.
* Notice that Ramos Pinto cave is not open in holiday days and weekends. I have take a bonus that includes this cave and I have not been able to visit it.
* There is a cave that I think it is free: Croft. And some other like Vencesllaos where you pay, but If you buy some porto bottle then the visit is free.
* Don't forget to visit the point where the Douro and the Atlantic meet.
* If you like football, then Dragao stadium is superb.
