Owner description: Livraria Lello is a bookshop with an extraordinary historical and architectural value, located at the number 144 of Rua das Carmelitas, in downtown Porto, in Portugal. Its origins date back to 1881, when the brothers José and António Lello opened an establishment at the nearby Rua do Almada, Porto, dedicated to publish and selling books. In 1894 they purchased the Chardron Bookstore, founded in 1869 by the French publisher Ernest Chardron, responsible for publishing much of the work of the famous Portuguese writer Camilo Castelo Branco. The expansion of business encouraged the Lello brothers to build a new house for their shop. They choose the neighbourhood of Carmelitas, a prestigious shopping area that was being developed in the city of Porto. The project of the building was entrusted to the engineer Francisco Xavier Esteves – considered the introducer of reinforced concrete in civil constructions in Portugal – which ended up presenting a true work of art. Opened in 1906, the bookshop boasts a façade in Gothic style, distinct from the surrounding urban landscape. Inside, shelves and ceilings are copiously. The staircase is particularly remarkable, as well as the large stained glass window bearing the bookshop monogram with the motto "Decus in labore" (dignity at work, in Latin). In 2016, a careful restoration gave back the original look and brightness to the façade and the stained glass. Travel + Leisure magazine considered Livraria Lello as the coolest bookshop in the world; the television station CNN consider it to be the most beautiful on the planet; Time magazine, The Guardian, Lonely Planet, all recognized that Livraria Lello is one of the most beautiful in the world for its unique historical and artistic value.

We arrived in the late arvo so not very busy which was good! 5 euro to enter but if you buy a book you get a discount. Very cool library! Definitely felt like I was in Harry Potter. Much smaller than you imagine though. Small selection of English books. Doesn’t take long to see it.
Best Portuguese tarts right next door!! We used the hop on hop off bus to get there (though it stops on other side of the park so you have to walk there).

We got there at 10:07am and the line to enter was already an hour long, but at least we bought our tickets online beforehand because the line to buy tickets was even longer! Don’t know why they don’t just let you buy tickets at the door. We also had to put all our bags in a locker, make sure you have a Euro or else you can’t use the lockers/get the key. There are 2 cute cafes right next to the Livraria so get in line early and enjoy a delicious pastry and coffee while you wait in line :)

When you are lucky there is no queue, buy your tickets first!!! Beautiful shop but not everything you see is wood!! Among others the stairs decoration isn't. Worth visit.

Not only for all Harry Potter's lovers, this library is littlerally an artistic aged rare pearl. A wooden baroque central staircase, middleage style books glass cases inspire a suggestive atmosphere.
A real playground for all books lovers, kids and adults.
