This museum is a real pledge of Barcelos cultural heritage.

Pottery has been a hadicraft activity in this Portuguese region, an artistic activity which have been feeding a lot of families for centuries.

Museu de Olaria
The pottery Museum you will find in the old building who once was the “Casa dos Mendanhas” situated in the middle of the historic centre of Barcelos, at walking distance from the Igreja Matriz and the Paço dos Condes. Unfortunately it was closed on the moment we there to visit (Sunday), but it can be included in your visit of the city of Barcelos.
Actually it has about 9000 pieces, divided over a collection of Portuguese ceramiques from the North until the South, and from other foreign countries as Angola, Argélia, Brazil, Timor, Chili, Spain and Cabo Verde.
The mission of this museum is buying, investigate the important Pottery Patrimony, and to conserve it.

Old home converted to beautiful museum. It is a light high ceilinged space where art can be displayed well. The museum is handicapped equipped and easy to navigate. We saw examples of pottery accompanied by a well done video showing the artists creating their work. We spent a pleasant hour on a rainy day. At the time of our visit it was free but this may change in the future as they add space.
