Hotel Pina has very friendly en well English speaking owners. Rooms are decent. They have no airco, but we did not need it. Funchal has sun but in the evening it became always cooler. Sight from the hotel is great, rooms, breakfast; cleaning are OK. You are searching for a minus? If you eat in the evening in town, you have to climb for 10-15 minutes to the hotel. But you lose all your calories :-). The hotel has his own bar, but it gives no noises.

The welcome was warm and the ensuite rooms were clean and comfortable. We had a room with a small balcony which had a good view down the hill to the harbour so you can see the boats coming in and out of Funchal. There is a small swimming pool. Free wifi in the bar. The staff are lovely and very willing to help you with anything you want. The owner speaks excellent english. Breakfast was basic but adequate with orange juice, very good coffee or tea, rolls, cheese, cold meat, eggs. The hotel has a bar with inside and outside seating which is great after a day out as you can return and sit on a large terrace with a lovely cold beer. The terrace has good views of Funchal and the bar sells both hot and cold drinks and packaged snacks such as crisps, peanuts etc but if you want anything more there is a small supermarket a short distance away down the very steep hill which sells most things and makes delicious rolls and sandwiches. The hotel serves breakfast only. The hotel is in a residential area of Funchal and be aware that it is on a very steep hill (although most of the hotels in Funchal are) and it took us 10-15 mins to walk down into the centre of town. Recommend a taxi back unless you are very fit. Thank you Residential Pina for a very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view and balcony.

Booking from the UK a few months in advance we were pleased by the can do attitude of Michaela. Everything went very smoothly and all emails were answered promptly. A warm welcome on our arrival to the hotel. Great views from the poolside and a happy barman who understood enough English to have a pleasent few nights. A good basic breakfast to set us off each day. We will be back

Found this hotel through booking.com and trip advisor but decided to book direct with the hotel. This is a lovely family run business. Micaela on reception is really the only one that speaks English but she was extremely helpful throughout the booking process, explaining the difference in rooms and advising us on how to get from the airport to the hotel. We decided to book room 202 which had a small kitchenette. The room was lovely and big with fantastic views of the town and harbour. The balcony was amazing with 2 comfy chairs, a great place to just sit and admire the view. The bathroom was really big with a good shower and plenty of hot water. There was a tv which had CNN News and a BBC entertainment channel but there also seemed to be quite a lot of English films and American programmes on the other channels, not that you go on holiday to spend time watching TV. Breakfast was just simple continental, to be honest it wasn’t really my sort of thing, it would have been nice to have had a toaster to make toast and to have had some hot food selections. The two ladies that organised the breakfast were really sweet, but didn’t speak any English. They bring you a tray of food with rolls and croissants, a plate of ham and cheese or one day we had cheese and hard boiled eggs, and then one day we had yoghurst and another day bananas. I think if you were staying for more than a few days you would want a bit more choice but we were only staying for 4 nights so it was adequate. The walk up to the hotel is not for the faint hearted, its only about a 20 minute walk to the sea front but half of the walk is almost vertical so you need to be very fit to get up and down, otherwise you would need to use the taxis.

There was also free wi fi which was good, sometimes it was a bit hit or miss in our actual room but as soon as you went downstairs to reception it was fine. There was also a safe in the room to hire for 2 euros per day which was very cheap.

We found plenty to do for our three days. The sightseeing buses are good value, it was 20 euros per person for a two day pass. There are two routes, the blue route that goes up to Monte and then the red and green route that goes along the coast which stops at a lovely fishing town. Monte is great, you have the church and some botanical gardens up there, plus you can get the cable car up and down. You also get the toboggan from there which is a must do - it is such great fun - its 30 euros for two people. Note that they don’t work on Sundays. We also got a tut tut up to Monte which again was good fun - that was 30 euros for 2 people one way. Note that the other cable car to the botanical gardens wasn’t open in January.

There are plenty of restaurants in the town but at night the town was very very quiet, hardly anyone was around eating out. I think most of the tourists are probably staying in the bigger hotels on an all inclusive basis. Also the restaurants seemed to have quite a limited menu, its either meat or fish so if you are vegetarian like me you will struggle to find something to eat. We found a nice Italian called La Pasta by chance as it was tucked away in one of the back streets - it was the best meal we had and also the cheapest. There is also a Mcdonalds and Pizza Hut along the front.

Weather was lovely and warm, 22 degrees every day so very pleasant for walking around. And it was very mild at night, you just needed a cardigan or fleece. We took all our winter clothes with us but didn’t need them at all.

We used a private transfer company madeira-airport-transfers.com to get to and from the airport which was a brilliant service. It was about 35 euros for the return journey and certainly saved a lot of time mucking around with the local bus service - it only took about 15 minutes to get to the hotel. Having said that the local bus service seemed to be excellent and there are plenty of taxis around.

So all in all we would recommend Funchal for a few days holiday and would definitely recommend the Residencial Pina which was charming.

Room Tip: Room 202 was on the second floor with fantastic views of the town and harbour and also had a small kitchenette
