This is the second time we have visited the Cliff Bay and we thought last time it couldn't get any better but it did.

As before the facilities, staff and great quality are fantastic but this time we enjoyed our stay even more.

Keep up the great work!!!

Stayed in April to celebrate birthday and anniversary. Notwithstanding to poor weather
I have to say the hotel was a surprise. A very warm welcome at reception with a nice glass of fizz. Lovely lounge areas with plenty of comfy seating. We had booked a sea view room and could not have wished for a better room or view. Room very comfortable and a good size with pleasant bathroom and a shower that actually worked incredibly well! Bed was extremely comfortable with hooray proper feather type pillows not those awful foam rubber ones which most hotels these days seem to favour. There was a large terrace with seating and a lounger with an unusual feature that being a sunshade awning that pulled out over the terrace - this to give shade but in our case to shelter from the rain!
We ate only at the Rose Garden restaurant on our first night and this was a buffet which I think it does every evening but with a different theme. I must say it was nothing special but not unpleasant either. The breakfasts were excellent though with a large choice.
There is a free shuttle into Funchal each day but you must book it the day before and its free.
A word about the staff. All very professional and efficient with a natural friendliness and all spoke excellent English - good stuff!
We did have mixed weather but Funchal old town is brilliant and eating out there is an amazing experience with some incredibly good value and food eateries but more about them on another review. There are 2 pool areas, one at top level which is an in and out pool with lots of loungers the other is at sea level accessed by a lift. This pool area is a bit sparse and uninteresting but I think it could be because they have quite strong S W gales which I think probably washes everything away so the area is kept basic. they are loads of loungers and a very nice poolside restaurant/bar. You can swim in the sea from here off a small pier but only by climbing down a ladder which may not suit everybody.
The only downside to the whole trip was being at the airport when they had several weeks of cross winds which had caused severe delays. We spoke to many people who had been trying to get back to the UK for 5 or more days in the main due to Easyjets inability to land at the airport. The airport is also a dreadful place to be held up in being very crowded with very little seating. We were lucky and got back with only a 3 hour delay and as we had paid for speedy boarding took preference over other passengers who hadn't - take note of that when booking!

Room Tip: Get the south facing sea view rooms as high a floor as possible

This was our second visit to the Cliff Bay, after many stays at the Eden Mar and Porto Mare closer to the Lido. Our stay last year couldn't be faulted and we were looking forward to a similar experience this year. We were, however, disappointed as the housekeeping standards seemed to have slipped and were not what you would expect of a hotel with such a good reputation. We also experienced considerable noisy disturbances from room renovations within the existing hotel which we were not informed about on check-in. We would also like to add that whilst the restaurant and pool staff maintained the expected high standards they were let down by some of their colleagues on reception.

Room Tip: Higher floors with Funchal view recommended

This is our favorite hotel in Madeira. We stayed for the 3:rd time and loved
it. But we are a bit worried about the selection in the Gallo D’oro breakfast. The buffé is very limited and the selection of soya products is unvisible. I had to ask every morning for this products. And wait for someone to bring it to me, if they were in the mood. Otherwise ask again. No sparkling wine, we had it the years before. And no salmon on the buffet.

We booked a superior “top floor” room with a sea view. Room was spacious and comfortable. We are both fussy about pillows, but the ones here were the best ever. We slept like babies, we were so comfortable. Bathroom excellent, big walk-in shower. We stayed at Reid’s Palace last year and the room there had an old fashioned high sided bathtub which we had to climb into to have a shower. We’re retired folks so didn’t much like that. Nothing to hold on to, didn’t feel very safe. No problem like that at Cliff Bay.

It’s not as if we’re unfit. We used the well equipped gym At Cliff Bay a lot. Good free weight section. Hotel is good for walking too. A couple of miles or so,down to Funchal or a few miles to Camara de Lobos harbour in the other direction along the coast.

But now the weird thing. Top floor rooms get to have breakfast in the Gallo d’Oro restaurant. Michelin starred. But don’t get too excited, the breakfast is run by the hotel and has nothing to do with the restaurant except the dining room. You get to order your breakfast from the a la Carte and there is a buffet with cereals, bread etc. The buffet totally sucks. Because there are not so many eating there, the selection of breads, cheeses, meats etc is limited and not very inspired. The atmosphere is a bit stuffy.

Luckily, we tried the main buffet breakfast in the Rose Garden restaurant. Excellent. Huge selection of everything. Hot, cold, fresh fruits and salads. All delicious and plentiful. Great friendly service. So the “privilege” of eating in the Gallo d’Oro costs more money for an inferior breakfast. Decidedly odd.

We’ve booked again for next year but not a top floor room.
