Gerby gave us both a terrific day out birding. He took the two of us from our hotel at the agreed time and we set off in search of the Azores Bullfinch. At our first stop we heard the birds but didn’t manage a sighting. He was very persistent and our patience was rewarded after about 40 minutes of searching. There were a couple of them feeding just a few metres away. Like so often we then saw more individuals but the first two were the best.
Gerby local knowledge paid off because he took us over the minor roads which gave us great views over the eastern end of the island. He found a nice roadside cafe for complimentary drinks and later stopped in a nice spot for picnic lunch.
Afterwards we tried smaller sites where we connected with visiting Glossy Ibis and later some calling Quail, seen on the ground and in flight.
We finished off at the harbour for some sea birds ending our trip around 5pm at our hotel.
Thank you Gerby, you made it all fun, some super birds and happy memories of Sao Miguel island.
We had a fantastic day with Gerby. We are not experienced bird-watchers, but he taught us so much, and showed us some great birds during the day. He also talked passionately about the environment, and about the work he does in the Azores - and the challenges faced by the local community. A truly fascinating day!
Gerby was fun, and provided a lovely lunch prepared by his wife. He is clearly a very busy man, and took us out on a Sunday, which he would not normally do.
We felt very privileged to be in the company of such a knowledgeable, passionate and nice guy! Thank you Gerby.
He even followed up the trip by emailing us some photos from the day.
We spent a day with Gerby on Sao Miguel. He is an excellent guide, very knowledgeable and kind. We saw the Azorean bullfinch and lots of other Azorean and non azorean birds. He also gave us lots of additional interesting information on the Azores. We will definitely come back to Gerby next time we visit the Azores.
Gerby, we thank you for this journey.
We meant to watch birds but we did much more by talking about your life on the Islands, or simply Life on earth.
All the best for you and your wonderful family.
Reto and Catherine
There is no birding spot on Sao Miguel that Gerby doesn't know about! I thought I had good knowledge about the island from my previous trips and from the Internet, but when I went on a guided tour with Gerby I understood that there were so many hidden places to see. Top guiding from a very nice man to a very reasonable price. Highly recommended!
We went out to see the Azores Bullfinch and some other nearby birds with Gerby and he made sure we had an enjoyable trip and saw the birds we wanted to see. He even sneaked around on the ground for a bit to make sure we got some close-up photos of a stunning spotted sandpiper. It was a memorable day and we'll certainly be back in touch the next time we're back in the Azores, which might be in September and October when there are more rare migrants around. Thanks again, Gerby!
